Question What are your top five games this generation, and why?

  1. Bloodborne -- This is my game of the century. The atmosphere and graphics are great but the control is what really makes it for me. The game is really hard but when you die you always feel like it's your fault vs so many other games where you feel like you're wrestling the controls (eg like in God of War where I got killed so many times by Sigrun because I'd accidentally go into Rage mode while trying to make a quick dodge since it uses L3+R3 for rage mode). Then Maria and Orphan of Kos are two of the greatest boss fights I have ever played. Note the complete version is a must just for those two boss fights, though the rest of DLC is good too. A clear 10/10 for me.
  2. NieR Automata -- I love the variety in this game. It's mostly a semi-open world hack and slash but it mixes in some space shooter sections as well as a few 2D sidescroller hack and slash sections. On top of the fast paced combat there is such an interesting story written here and the music is great too. One of the few games I have ever played that I'd rate 10/10. You know you'll always get a great story with Yoko Taro's games, but seeing Platinum come and add their patented coked up mouse in blender combat (credit to Honest Game Reviews for that line) really takes the game to the next level. If only we could have had this combat in Nier Gestalt / Nier Replicant last gen.
  3. Dying Light -- It starts slow for the first couple of hours, but once you're able to start getting sickles and swords it becomes such violent fun hacking zombies to bits. I love how it's made to look like a 70s B-movie from the film grain to the music to the one dimensional characters. And the parkour is awesome, especially at night before you have built your character strong enough to fight off the volatiles. Note the complete version is a must for the ending.
  4. Persona 5 -- Pretty funny game with interesting combat and a world of style, from the art to the brilliant acid jazz soundtrack (this has by far my favorite soundtrack in any game I have ever played). The first couple of hours of tutorial and exposition are like pulling teeth, just like Persona 3 and Persona 4, but the game is great after. The characters aren't as interesting as Persona 4 and the story isn't as good as Persona 3, but the combat, dungeons, and art style are greatly improved. Easily my favorite turn based RPG since Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne on PS2.
  5. Super Mario Odyssey -- This is one of the most fun and creative games I have ever played. I loved the way 2D sections were worked into this game. And the control is so good too, I can't believe they were able to make findings moons and purple coins so much fun when collectibles are usually such a drag just meant to pad out most games that have them. The highlight for me was definitely the festival in New Donk City. Even if this was the only good game on Switch I'd have been happy to buy one just for this brilliant game. Easily my favorite Super Mario game since Super Mario World on SNES. Tough call between World and Odyssey for my second favorite Mario game (the NES original SMB1 will always be my number 1 in the series).

I'm interested to see what others love this gen and why. I should also add I loved God of War despite the control scheme that made rage mode too easy to accidentally go into, but it has been such a great generation that it got edged out from my list. I didn't want to make it sound like I didn't like the game just because I felt like I was wrestling against the controls in the Sigrun fight (and this game really deserves to be played on Give Me a Challenge or higher because the combat is excellent, and Sigrun is pretty hard to kill at the two highest difficulty settings).

Did Dying Light get grandfathered in or is it really current gen? I honestly felt that it was released on previous gen consoles... probably wrong though.

Anyway, I am typically in the minority with these types of threads but here's mine:

God of War - very different from the original series but in probably the best way possible, fantastic game
Gran Turismo: Sport - played a stupid amount of hours, bought like every car, amazing graphics and controls
Forza Horizon 3 - best of the series imho; loved the map and online experiences
Doom - returning to this iconic series in the current gen was both refreshing and fun; I loved the over-the-top nonsensical story
Prey - loved to see Arcane make something in the sci-fi realm; played campaign a few times (Moon Crash DLC was dumb though) -Dishonored 2 is runner up here*

And my biggest letdowns of the generation are:

Borderlands 3 - not a bad game but didn't really introduce enough attention-grabbing substance, UI is still meh in 2019
Fallout 76 - do I really need to explain this one?
Dirt Rally 2.0 - actually love this game, but CM wants you to keep spending real money to get new tracks and cars, no.
Outer Worlds - great ideas and game play but world felt small and RPG elements were too light and felt almost like an afterthought
Destiny 2 - although a great game in many ways, the player base fell apart really quickly and the worlds felt sterile without active users

I still actually hop into D2 from time to time, so I feel bad for considering it a letdown, but let's face it... grinding in any game gets old even if it's one that's masterfully crafted by top-tier talent.

It came out in early 2015 and only on PC/PS4/XB1.

And my biggest letdowns of the generation are:

By far my biggest letdown was Bethesda. Not having an Elder Scrolls this gen after having two last gen sucked. And then yeah, the trainwreck of Fallout 76 that everyone could see coming from a mile away. That company is dead to me this gen. Second biggest letdown is Valve. Not even asking for another Half Life, but how could there be no Portal game this gen?

Sad to hear you found The Outer Worlds disappointing. That's one of the first games I wanted to play after getting a gpu in my PC.

I don't think it's bad, and like a few other games I mentioned I actually like it, however without the ability to actually go into space and do manual exploration it just feels really condensed. The graphics are great, combat is tight, and characters are interesting enough but the overall package just fell short of my expectations. To be fair, though, I really like the simplified inventory and companion systems, ability to streamline quest objectives, and overall art direction. It feels really polished too I just wish there was a bit more in the overall scale of it. Nothing has to be Assassins Creed Odyssey in size mind you, but it would be nice to expand on the idea of having your own ship--as opposed to seeing it just statically docked all the time.

I also haven't quite finished it yet, so you new know... it could end up being something that grows on me. Plenty of other games to take its spot lol

1. Luigi's Mansion 3; I find myself stopping and playing... with everything in the game. This is the 1st game in a very long time that makes exploring a pleasure. I find myself just looking at the stages and absorbing the art style. And, tons of pleasant little surprises that pop up. Game play is fun as well.

2. Doom (2016); This is the kick in the ass the IP needed. Great graphics, gameplay and a story with ideas that are very promising. Sure, there isn't anything extensive here story wise. But, you are no longer just a dude running around shooting things. You are a force. A legitimate threat to hell. Very empowering.

3. Zelda: Breath of the Wild; It is what the original Zelda was when it 1st came out on the NES: you are all alone and you have to figure it all out. You can also spend hours and even days just doing stupid little things. It does feel frustrating at 1st, as it isn't a traditional Zelda in the sense of dungeons. But, it makes up for that with all the exploration, heroics and combat/gameplay.

4. Uncharted 4 Thief's End: From the 1st game to this latest and last notch, the IP itself is movie magic. Lots of fun to play. Wonderful characters.

5. Dues Ex: Human Revolution / Mankind Divided: I feel wrought when I play this game. Always worried about who is looking at me and always enticed to do bad things. Another great feeling is the despair that is all around you. So many wonderful things in terms of science and tech... yet, you always feel the hopelessness and destitution of everyone and everything around you.

I just got my ps4 a few weeks back, but for sure one of mine has to be Spiderman, i didnt even think i would like it but found i just cant put it down. And the HDR in that game is unreal. Uncharted 4 has to be another one for sure.

God of War, NieR Automata, Persona 5, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, and Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. All of these kept my attention well enough that I played them through to the end. God of War gets a special mention because both the surround sound effects and HDR presentation are so well done, and it's icing on the cake of a well written and produced game; I'd consider it a piece of art, as well as an example of the state of the art when it comes to sound and graphics.

God of War

Spiderman

Red Dead 2

That is all I played on console. Sold my ps4 pro as it was a dust collector, and the guy I sold it to was super excited about upgrading from his regular PS4. I think if I never play God of War again I am good. But I will miss spidey, even if I did get annoyed being Miles and MJ. It reminded me of the old Hulk game based on the Ang Lee movie. Anytime you were Banner, the game was terrible. This conjured up that memory, so not good. The rest of the game and DLC was big fun though.

Good to know. Spiderman is in my backlog still.

Mine too. Lately I have stopped buying anything I won't immediately play (as I'm currently playing Yakuza 3 on the PS4 and will play Yakuza 4 after that), but $15 for the GOTY edition Thanksgiving Week was way too good to pass up for a game that looks that impressive.

Even though it was only running at 30 fps on my PS4 Slim, I was so impressed by the graphics in Uncharted 4, especially considering how week the PS4 Slim's gpu is. Blows my mind what Naughty Dog can consistently get out of weak hardware.

I really have to play Hellblade. I can't wait to see what Ninja Theory and Obsidian can do next gen now with a lot of funding from Microsoft backing them.

Is this alright to play without having played the others? I'd guess so probably. I think Yakuza is the only series you can't jump into in the middle of.

I've heard that it is fine to play without playing the others.

I've also heard that if you didn't like the others, you probably won't like this one. I thought Luigi's Mansion on Gamecube was cool for about 30 minutes, then got super repetitive. I nearly bought LM3 because I thought the art style and stuff looked fantastic and just had so much charm, but opted not too because I heard from multiple people that it still played very similar to the past ones.

No need to have played the others.

If anything, maybe pick up one of the past versions (3DS if you have it) and check it out. You may or may not like the game mechanics - it is a huge departure from the past ones.

I usually wait almost until the end of a consoles life cycle. Just 3 weeks ago, I finally decided to get a Playstation 4. I don't buy within the first few years, due to wanting particular games.

Once I did pick it up....I grabbed these...

Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition "Installed and havnt started yet. Due to Red Dead Redemption"
Red Dead Redemption 2 "About 10 hours in"
Days Gone "About 3 hours or so in"
Devil May Cry 5 "Finished 8 times so far"
God Of War "Half way through"
Titan Fall 2 "Because it was $5 in Family Dollar"

Been playing through Red Dead Redemption recently. And only two word comes to mind. AWESOME GAME !
But, I don't think I need to say why I chose these to play. I think the answer is obvious. :)

1. The Witcher 3, best RPG I've played since Morrowind with a great looking world.
2. Ghost Recon Wildlands; one of the most fun coop games I've played on pc.
3. Dawn of Man. I have to stay away, get sunk in for hours managing my stone age tribe.
4. Broforce, over the top side scrolling mayhem.
5. Shadow of Mordor. Fantastic world and combat.

Outside those straight up there are mod mentions:
Divide et Empera mod for Rome II Total War
Europa Barbarorum II mod for MTW2
Open General making Panzer General 2 endlessly fun.
Reshade mods for FarCry 2 keeping it fresh.

I do hope for a day when shiny new Steel Panthers comes out.
