What are your thoughts on the CL Extigy?

Hi,

To safely fix my sound problems between the incompatibility problems w/ most sound cards and the MPX motherboards. I have come to the conclusion that the Extigy may fix all my problems untill a fix for other sound cards comes out.

Now you can look at my sig for my system information. I am not a crazed gamer. I like to play games but my MPX system is mostly for Video/Sound Editing. I use programs like Reason, Acid Pro 3.0, Sound Forge for sound editing and i will be getting a bunch of high end Video editing programs for this system too.

I am just curious as to your thoughts in general on the Extigy and would it be a safe buy to use w/ XP Pro?

Thank you

It might be a good option for you. All the reviews have been positive so far, but I'm still not sold on the reliability of using the USB channel for sound. Still, for it's targeted audience (laptop owners), it's the only option they have.

This device has timing issues and glitches in both direct sound recording and playback! The USB interface is just too slow to consider this device for recording even using a notebook! :|

Cheers!

Sh!t, I hope I'm not too late. DO NOT BUY AN EXTIGY!!!!!!!!! I will admit it, I fell for it. I thought it would be a viable solution to my laptop sound needs. WRONG!! This thing is the biggest piece of sh!t I've ever been forced to use. It crashes my system all the time and simply makes my life a living hell. I only bought it to get the spdif IN for my laptop and it can't even do that right. And cl tech support has been utterly useless. Utterly!
When I owned a desktop rig I swore off cl products years ago and now i'm kicking myself in the a$s for not sticking with that decision. In case you didn't hear me before, do not buy an extigy. It is a piece of crap and cl did nothing but flat out LIE about its abilities.

ps: cl sucks huge smelly zit covered as$

it looked compelling and the reviews i read were glowing about the product, for the most part....hmmm

i'd have to think that anyone having problems with this product mgiht be, or most likely are, having USB related problems...but whatever.

i hate to recommend any creative components cuz they all suck, but this is the ONLY one that looks ok...

curious, are u saying that ALL soundcard chipsets refuse to work in your system? i dont' think so. why don't u try a non-creative add in card, like a santa cruz or fortissimo II or something? i admit i dont' know much about amd's MPX chipset, but it MUST work with at least one high/mid end consumer card utilizing a decent chipset.

edit:

oh, looks like u've already tried the CL chipset cards....try the philip's series cards then (i.e. accoustic edge).
also, from what i've heard, it may not the CL chipset as the problem but hercule's drivers instead...

If you have a laptop you get a professional PCMCIA card, not an external module from Creative Labs. Ugh....
Costs about the same but way, way, way better quality from the PCMCIA.

You could even get a cheap PCMCIA "drive bay" for your PC at home so you could use the card there when not in your laptop. Why waste a high-end audio solution when not using the laptop? 😀

<< All the reviews have been positive so far. >>

The reviews I've read (Gamespot, Computer Games Magazine (I think)) were mostly positive but mentioned intermittent glitches, and the reviewers had to soft-pedal the glitches to remain positive and keep those CL ads flowing.

Hmm.. I was thinking about getting an extigy for my SV24 system. Does anyone else have any personal experience with the extigy? Anything good about them? If the extigy is a no go, I don't think I have a viable sound setup for my SV24.... 🙁

Dood, if you can show me a pcmcia card with spdif IN for about the same cost as the crapagy I'll lick your boots. PLEASE post a link for me and others.

nnnaaaaaaaa its not to late. I never got it.

I returned my Tyan/Radeon 8500 so i don't have a workstation at the moment. I'd rather see what other motherboards come out w/ the B2 rev MPX chipset.

There is a good chance though i will be if anything getting a CL Audigy Platinum EX.

As for the sound card problems, i do thing so, there is a KNOWN issue w/ the MPX chipset and it not having the ability to address 200 and 208 I/O ranges for the game port. I have 2 sound cards a Santa Cruz and a GTXP both same problem. Yes i get sound and all that but i am one of those people that needs a working Gameport/midi port. the forums on 2cpu.com has a huge thread on this issue.

Anything higher then 200 and 208 it can see perfectly, but on those sound cards those are the only options in windows. Nothing higher.

I'm surprised that no one else mentioned this, but one MAJOR issue with the Extigy is that since it is USB, it uses a large amount of CPU time. (I believe 10-25%!!) So if you were doing anything CPU intensive, like gaming or audio video editing...... I would steer clear of the extigy.
