What are your thoughts on interview attire?

There is a small part of me that truly believes that only someone interviewing for a Executive level position should show up for an interview in a full three piece suit and tie.

For less formal sort of jobs such as management or technician I think a simple shirt/tie & slacks should suffice... what do you guys think?

Do you think the average salary for the position should play in the wardrobe choice for interview? do you believe in always wearing a suit/tie for interviews....

I bring this up not only because I am curious but I also wish to receive idea's for best places to go in order to get a simple resume attire 'get-up' My wardrobe is lacking right now, I have shoes and dress shirts and belts but only own khaki shirts and no ties... I do not even own a suit jacket... so where do you shop and where would you recommend I go to get a reasonably priced suit? Keep in mind I would only use it for interviews... so while Id like something that is not cheap I do not need absolute top of the line, I have heard wool lasts long but I would imagine it could get pretty hot.... I live in San Diego Downtown area...

I have seen people go to networking events in complete suite and ties and thought to myself why put yourself through the discomfort if you're simply fishing for information on available jobs... you're not actually applying to anything.... I myself make sure to be clean shaven and nice haircut but simply go with khaki's and polo..

From when I posted this same question:

It is acceptable to wear dress pants, shirt and tie.
You will make a positive impression with a nice suit.
Wear nice shoes whatever you do.

3 piece suit? As in with vests? That sounds so old-world and stuffy. I've never seen anyone wear a 3-piece, nevermind interviews.

As for any white collar jobs, I've always went with nothing less than a tie, jacket, and slacks.

I guess if you're in IT or new-culture work like Google, just biz casual may work. But I wouldn't risk it unless it's explicitly stated.

Dress like this and you're all set for 99% of white collar jobs:

I never understood so many 'how do i dress for interview' threads here. Just do above.

what industry are you trying to apply to?

If you're in accounting and not walking around in a full suit to interview, you're an idiot. Other industries may differ.

My everyday attire for work is jeans and a hoodie/fleece. When we interview, we are expected to wear minimum shirt and tie, suit is preferred. This goes for initial interviews and also promotions. So I don't think the industry even matters that much.

I have never worn a suit to an interview. I mostly worked in IT and just wore a collared dress button down shirt with pants (most of the time not even dark slacks but dockers khaki's or the like...) but now im earning an MBA and thinking that its time to finally buy a suit....

and yes, when i say three piece suit, that is exactly what I mean Zeze vest and all.... I have seen people at networking events utilize this attire, i can't help but laugh inside.. thinking they should pull out a pocket watch and monocle like mr peanut. I think prior military seem to think its cool because when they're oversea's in middle east they can obtain custom tailored suits at low costs so they get suckered into tailoring three piece suits because it gets the tailors more money...

The networking events even specify for attire to wear business casual or whatever you'll be needing to wear for the rest of the day (if the event is held in the morning...)

I would get the classic suit (not the 3 piecer)...but then again, I like to suit up.

Rule of thumb is always dress a step up.

If you wear a tucked in collared shirt and khakis at work, wear your best with a blazer for the interview.

If you wear a blazer at work, throw on a tie for the interview.

If you wear jeans and a tshirt, and most of the industry does, business casual.

etc.

are you on-board with zeze with the pictorials of what you believe to be 'nice' suits? or do you believe it should follow a set color scheme.... aka black or bust...

IMHO:

DO NOT DO BLACK DO NOT DO BLACK DO NOT DO BLACK

If you got one money suit, make it a money charcoal grey suit.

I would never work for apple, I have a moral issue regarding their their high-priced proprietary junk. So ill never have to worry about that, thanks for the info though, they're going downhill with the new change in Leadership IMHO... RIP steve jobs, their innovation is dead.

If you can't figure out what to wear to the interview for the job you are applying for, doing the actual job will probably make your brain explode.

it wouldn't be considered the 'classic' look? the goal is to stand out from the crowd? why not show up in a baby blue or bright pink suit like a pimp?

Thanks for your input, but such is not the case, I am posting just to get idea's because I could careless about style, with me its about what you're able to bring to the table and if you show up with a polo shirt and dockers fine by me if you know your shit, however most people don't see it that way and in order to even be considered you have to 'dress to impress' and i just wondered what ATOT has to say..
