What are your remedies for poison ivy?

Well, i normally break out like crazy when i get poison ivy. I know i have it right now, i got a few bumps showin and i know i was in it the other day while outside working trimin some bushes back from a fence.

do you guys know of anything that kills poison ivy, or significantly reduces the time it lasts? (yes, google is my next step after posting).

Apply cortisone cream and don't take hot showers for a while.

That's about the best you can do, I think.

I don't get into anything that looks like poison ivy or oak. I learned my lesson as a wee child growing up in the country.

To to a drug store or pharmacy and ask them. The pharmacist can tell you, for free and probably better than anyone here, what would be best.

nothing works for me.
there are creams like cortisone to help temporarily, but its not a permanent fix.
i have to go get a shot of steroids at the doctor.
that clears it up faster than anything.

I swear if im downwind of that stuff, i will get it.

ive gotten steriod pills about 3 times before for poison ivy. The doctor also reccommended that to cure the itching to take a HOT shower (as hot as you can stand it). and it works, it really works, but it doesnt do anything to cure it up faster. HappyPuppy, i had no choice. i was at work doing it, and i cant just say. "no, im not doing it, there is poison ivy". I also was wearing long pants, boots, and a t-shirt, but everything was soaked, so my ankles are going to be getting it the worst.

My bad for assuming you were stupid. Few of us can refuse to do what we are told to do at work.

I hope you get better quick. I still recommend asking a pharmacist, though.

i just might. but i can ignore the itching, its just how much it erupts normally, normailly they arent just lil dots, but big blisters like.

i guss i also signed myself up for gettin poison ivy since im landscaping for the summer. but i also signed myself up to get the first decent tan, not sunburn ive ever gotten, cuz im a pasty white boy who cant tan, but for some reason is tanning this year and not burning LOL.

i have ivy super dry, normally all it does for me is stop the itching for a while.

I have been using some jewel weed from the back of my house and applying the juices from it, i dont know how it will work, but it supposedly does. I guess i will go and take some vitamin C also.

If you can stand it, wait till Monday to see your doc & save the charge of an ER visit, meantime, take benadryl (diphenhydramine) according to the instructions on the bottle, and use a hydrocortisone ointment, the highest % available in your state.

I've used Jewel Weed before, right after contact, and it seemed to work. I think its important to use it before it causes the rash though. It seems to detoxify the oils of the poison ivy and helps break it up.

IGNORE MUCH OF WHAT YOU'VE HEARD IN THIS THREAD.

Go buy Zanfel it is very expensive, and you might need two tubes. However, I've been extremely sensitive to PI/PO for a VERY long time, and I always end up with a systemic infection. If you use this you will destroy the sores quickly. If systemic you're going to need Decatron and/or Prednisone. I suggest trying the Zanfel, and going to the doctor to get steroids if it becomes worse.

Technu worked amazingly well for me once -and once it didn't and I had to go get cortisone shot/pills. I have just seen web anecdotes of people who have unsuccessfully used technu and had zanfel work for them. Tec Labs also makes a protectant that you can apply *before* contact if you expect to get it.

FWIW, technu is the stuff people have been using for ages (at one point I thought someone said it had been initially developed in the 50's as an antiradiation product, but that may be apocryphal [oh, bad pun, sorry]). I don't doubt the zanfel is more effective as the new product on the block.

If you already have it, I'll second what someone else's doctor said about the hot water.

I usually get is on my arms or hands.....I get the sink running warm water...start running the water over the outbreak....it feels just like I'm scratching it..feels great....then you get used to it and it stops....then you bump the hot water up a bit....the scratching feeling starts over again.

Keep doing this until you can't stand the heat. It won't take but a few times and the ivy will start healing up pretty fast....much faster than cremes and other solutions.

I am VERY allergic, to the point that if I get a lot of it, I get a fever and my eyes swell shut.

The cortizone/prednisone dose packs or shots are the next best thing.

I will buy some of the stuff that Mill linked to try next time I get it.

i said that about the hot water pacfan u dumbass 😉

but i think i will have my mom run out and buy some of that stuff tomorrow, or i might.

ive never had stuff swell shut, but i get it about every area possible, inbetween my fingers sucks the most, cuz both sides swell and you cant keep your fingers shut. But i think every time i have had poison ivy prior to right now has been systemic.

I've had poison ivy pretty bad before. The worst was when it pretty much totally covered my legs from my ankles up to my personal areas, as well as part of my fingers. It took a couple of weeks for it to get better.

After it started to spread, I toughed it out for about a week ... (this was when it hit its peak) and thats when I started to take over the counter Benedryl tablets since histamines were (at least in part) responsible for the breakouts .... After a week on the Benedryl I was back to normal.

This was back when I was 14 or 15 years old ... so it was quite some time ago

I'm also very reactive/allergic to posion ivy. Once, my father was weedeating (poision ivy was in the weeds, no one knew), and I got hit everywhere that the skin was exposed. Even my face.

It took multiple steroid shots from the doctor to get better, and even then, my eyes were almost swolen shut for a week.
