What are your plans for the future?

What sort of hardware are you guys waiting on, and do you have the same itching feeling to get them now! All day I just think about my future PC and how im gonna run Far Cry at 1600x1200x32 with details maxed out! My dream machine is something like:

Anthlon 64 3400+
nv40 / r420
1024mb OCZ dual channel DDR PC-4200

(Or better depending on what future prices have in store😛)

Wow I just cant wait! Hopefully that will be sometimes in august🙂

Why not throw in a dual Vapochillsystem as well, if you plan on utilizing pc-4200 memory.

BTW I would rather have a Dell with celeron and intelExtreme IGP, because it will be far better.

well, my plans for the future would cost way too much. my dream rig costs over $11,000. since i plan on becoming a dentist, i figure i can afford it, in say....20 years. 🙂

I'm thinking of a bit of a dream system in my head.

Kingwin All Aluminum Case
Antec 350W Blue LED PSU
AMD 64 3800+ (I know it's not out yet)
Whatever Socket 939 board with NF3-250 wins reviews
2GB OCZ 3500 or around there, Maybe just 1GB though
3x 74GB Raptors (two in Raid 0, one as boot drive)
Atech Pro9 Media Card Reader
Audigy 2 ZS Platinum
NV40 Primary Display
Hopefully 2 PCI-E Cards for second and third monitors
3 19" CRTs, I've got one, I want 2 Samsung 955DFs
Microsoft Wireless Desktop Pro
Logitech Z680 speakers
Plextor 12 or 16x DVD+/- RW Whatever is out at the time
Shuttle Pro V2 (for video editing purposes)

I plan on building it around Christmas. Hopefully it will come out to less than $3,000. Any recommendations?

I built the pc I wanted amd 64 3400+ 1gb ddr 400 just need better video card then this radeon 9600 pro, very fast cpu.

We'll be buying a new house and it will have one room dedicated for PC's... I'm planning on building a 4 PC lan for gaming. 🙂

Good call. Wifey and I are buying a house and I get a room for the same purpose.

And as to my dream system, I've made no solid plans yet. It will be a big leap forward from my current, though.

The most interesting thing to see about people's plan for their future upgrade path right now revolves around the videocard. I find it amusing to see almost everyone pick the new Nvidia card over the Radeon X800 and simply jump to the conclusion that Geforce 6800 will be better, without forgetting that image quality and performance hit with AA/AF enabled might be much different from the raw 0AA/0AF performance. Even if NV40 is faster under normal conditions, just like GeforceFX can keep up with 9800 series, it might not with 4AA/8AF+. Who knows.....

Either way, my rule of thumb is not to upgrade unless the game that I play runs too slow on my computer, which of course has come with FAR Cry running as fast as me vs. Donovan Bailey. But, the time calls for a 2-month wait period for the prices to come down because i am poor 😀

As far as CPU, motherboard and RAM, no need to upgrade until the speed doubles.

Edit: Also itching for Audigy 2 (ZS) upgrade from onboard sound.

My next purchase will be a mobile Barton and nF2 IGP board for my son's boxen. I just bought a modded X-box and some games so that'll keep me entertained while I see what shakes out with the hardware forthcoming. I just sent off a 5 figure check last month to further accelerate the payoff of my home so the $40,000+ in interest saved by doing so should buy lots of toys 😀

What are your plans for the future?
"Gee, Brain, What are we going to do tomorrow night?"
"Same thing we do every night, Pinky, TRY TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD!"
😛

I'm waiting for Via to bring out their next generation of CPUs and Mini-ITX boards so that I can build a sweet HTPC that'll handle DiVX half decently, and not need a fan.

Upgrade to P4 3.4 Northwood and GeForce 6800, and then sit back for a bit until all the new stuff (pci-e, ddr2, BTX, 939/775, etc...) are implemented and at a reasonable price point.

The Athlon64 3400+ does't run dual channel on any motherboards. The dual channel concept does not really apply to the Athlon64, HOWEVER, the Opteron/FX have two HTT channels(actually I think 3, one for multi-cpu communucations), not the same as P4 and Athlon XP dual channel though.

A64 4000 (if I can hold out that long)
2 GB RAM
10,000RPM Serial ATA
Nvidia or ATI top of the line card (whichever is king when my A64 is out).

All this is pure speculation for now though...planning on upgrading mid summer.

ditto on the room for the computers 🙂 just bought a new house a few months back, basement is all mine 🙂 half for computer room and half for workout room, still working on the design of how i want to finish teh baseement though.

anyway, as for a rig, i don't bother thinking about a new computer until i'm unhappy with the current one i have. waste of time always drooling over crap. about the only thing i'm considering upgrading in the near future is my 5900, for whatever is fastest in the next round, and until its at a price point i'm willing to pay for, (<300) so probably not until xmas 🙂

i doubt nv40/r420 will run far cry at 1600/pimped out (fluidly), unless the new cores introduce something exceptionally great, and judging by the lack of marketing crap from either camp, i will take that as a 'no'.

i am/was disappointed with the game runnign at 1024 pimped out 3.3GHz/1GB/5900, it ran very well, but there was noticeable choppyness too frequently. i would have used 800 if i wasn't on a 21"

For gamers they don't really do much. Games seem to be mostly single threaded, and SCSI is expensive, hot and not worth it, even Raptors aren't needed, they don't do much except decrease load times every now and then.
For HTPC you don't need super fast HDD's either, and for playing, a single CPU is fine, it's noise/heat that's more of an issue (another reason for single proc and no SCSI).

Plus it's more high end stuff, us desktop users seem to stick with desktop components, even in dream machines. Go figure.

k, i remade my dream comp. it'll consist of an fx-55 with dfi lanparty mobo for socket 939, and r420/nv40 vid card (whcihever's better), uber ram, uber 30" lcd tv monitor, and duel raptors on a raid 0 array.

This seems to be a quite popular decision! I'm closing on my house this Friday, and one of the 3 bedrooms will be my PC room (2 PCs, 1 PC in the bedroom that we'll be using for a PVR that will be moved in for gaming)😀

I'll probably build a new system in August\September. I don't really have my mind set on any new hardware because none of it is even out yet.
