What are your CPU upgrade plans?

current system: Athlon XP 1800+ @ 2.0ghz


If conroe isnt avaiable at a decent price during the week of 7/23 ..then Im probably gonna go with an X2 system.
 
My plan is as follows, it's fluid:
1. If the cheapest conroe is available and very OCable, I will do that as the next upgrade within next 6month.
2. or X2 AM2 style become half priced into say 150s. I'd go for it as an intermediate before quade-K8L upgrade.
3. If neither is a clear winner then I will sit it out this year, and let next year Q1 availability decide.
 
I have a AMD 64 3000+ 939 and a P4 511 LGA 775.
My 64 is my primary and gaming computer.

I just swapped motherboards MSI nF4 Ultra to DFI nF4 Ultra.

Im gonna get an Opteron 175 or 180 maybe this December, if they still have them in stock and the price is around 300. If not I'll get a X2 4600+ and make that my gaming computer.

Since I game at 1280 * 1024 resolution (GPU bound?) I'll call that computer done, and probably plan to use it for 3 years, maybe upgrading the video card and maximizing the ram up to 4GB.

Conroe is nice, but Im not going to buy it, I rather dump the money onto a better video card.

EDIT: My venice is still running stock at 1.8. I havent done any research on the stepping code, and havent learned to OC yet plus I need a SI - 120. So if the Opteron 175 180 isnt cheap, I plan to OC the heck out of it.

I might get Conroe for my LGA 775 maybe in December 2007.
 
currently running a P4-M laptop

About a year ago, I started kicking around plans for a Socket 939 build.
I saved up enough money to do the build about 2 months ago.
I waited for AM2 to launch.
I waited for an RD580 AM2 motherboard.
I am now waiting for Conroe.

Specifically, I plan to pick up a Conroe-compatible motherboard ASAP (Asus P5W DH Deluxe) and a Pentium D 805, overclock the snot out of that, then upgrade to Conroe (E6600) after the supply issues (availabilty and price gouging) settle down.
 
3200+ VENICE @ 2.4ghz

will upgrade later this year when and if 939 X2's get to about $175

I know the AM2 stuff is dropping, just hope for sure the 939 X2's will also.
 
Current: Winnie 3000+ @ about 2.4-2.6 GHz (depending on room temperature and how I feel)
Plan: X2 when prices drop to about $150

I was planning on conroe 6600 but now I think I'll stick with my current rigs and upgrade the GPU and monitors.
 
Running an Opteron 170 @ 2.5GHz

Might look at upgrading in a years time, but probably get a newer video card before cpu.

Not jumping on the Conroe bandwagon, as I've got all the cpu power I need atm. 😉
 
When I put my system together last year, I did it with the intention of getting a 4800 late this summer. After pricing what a change in platform is going to cost, it looks like I'm still getting the 4800 this summer.
 
My main rig hopefully will be upgraded to at least a new X2 once prices drop. I also plan to build a new AM2 rig or a Conroe rig. It all depends.
 
I have an A64 3000+ @ 2.4ghz and have no plans to upgrade until a faster CPU would actually affect gaming performance at my playing resolution (1600x1200). While the computer is used for other tasks, such as some video encoding, music playing, email, pictures, and http, the performance in those apps is fine enough for me. Cutting down a video encode from 4 hrs to 2 hrs doesn't really do anything for me since I basically just have it run overnight anyway, so I wouldn't care if it took 7 hours. While an X2 dropping to the $150 range is nice and all, I likely won't be getting one unless I build my son a cheap s939 system and use my chip in his and get the X2. But, so far, from this early information, Conroe and AM2 don't offer much for me.
 
I am using a 3500 winnie, running at 2.5 with 2gb ram and 6800gt.

i was considering conroe, but honestly i dont have problems running any games really at 1280 w. settings decently high so i'm just going to wait till DX10 hardware and vista is out before i upgrade
 
Running a Tbred 2100 right now and its reached its end for decent gaming. I'd like to upgrade no later than the end of August or September for some new games coming out then so its probably an AM2 X2 if the price is right or s939. If Conroe meets the hype and it looks stable enough (and is available at a decent price) I may go that route but I doubt it.
 
Hard to say at the moment. Either I go for a new mobo + cpu (Conroe) for a year then change to the K8L once it arrives, or I just buy a complete new system. Which is mighty expensive. Or I just keep the one that I just upgraded for another year. As my product loyalties still lye with AMD. All depends on supply and if the performance offered is worth the money invested.
 
Current system: Opty 165. I don't see myself upgrading anytime soon. So when I do, it will be something that doesn't even exist yet. And which brand I pick will depend on who's got the best stuff out at the time.

My Current Plan: Skip AM2 and go for whatever AMD comes out with after that. Unless they really fall behind Intell.
 
Upgraded to X2 3800 a couple of months ago from XP 2800 Barton, more for features than need for speed. Don't oc much and won't be looking to upgrade mobo and cpu any time soon, unless of course the add on Asrock daughter board, DDR2 and AM2 hit the sweet spot and offers something over and above my current setup. Next upgrade is to replace my trusty X800 Pr😀o AGP with X1800 XT PCIe GPU in the next 8 to 12 months.
 
Currently on an Opter 144 at 2.3Ghz. My next CPU upgrade is a ways away, as I've only had this one for 6 months. But the way things are looking, it will stay with me for quite some time, I may just buy a Mac Book Pro before I upgrade my CPU. But I'd PREFER to buy a Dual Core AMD depending on the upcoming price drops.

62% (13/21) of current AMD users plan to stay with AMD (citing mainly price and somewhat some brand loyalty)
28.6% (6/21) of current AMD users plan to go Intel this time.

These 14.3% people who are switching from A64/opyt need a lesson in Upgrade Economics 101. It doesnt make any sense to upgrade to conroe over the marginal perfomance increases unless you have money to burn.

Its been my experience that AMD "platform" is less expensive in terms of upgrades than Intel. I was able to upgrade twice on Socket A (TBird to Barton 2500 XP), twice on S939 (3500+ to Opty 165). In both upgrades the only thing that change was CPU. I didn't need to buy a new mobo and memory like most Intel upgrade force you too.

I am skipping AM2 for K8L.
 
right now im on a A64 3200+ @ 2.6. Don't plan on upgrading any time soon( 2-3 years), but I should see a video card upgrade in the next 1-2 years, as well as maybe more RAM.
