What are your CPU upgrade plans?

Just looking to sample the popular opinion here at AT:

What are you using now (CPU and Speed) and WHEN and WHAT are you planning on upgrading to?

The WHEN and WHAT should assume what CPU/platforms are/will be available at the time.

e.g. A64 at 2.6Ghz now and planning to upgrade to dual core K8L on 4x4 1H 2007 (just an example)

just drop in and share your thoughts and plans. 🙂

I'm on a 3000+ Venice at 2.7... planning on dropping in an X2 3800+ when the prices drop in late July. After that, might be a while before I get anything faster. If K8L is all that, I might spring for it, but I don't know who the price/performance leader will be when I need to do another upgrade 🙂

Six weeks after an upgrade from a 1GHZ PIII to an Opteron 175, I'm not looking to upgrade any time soon. However a recently improved financial outlook coupled with impressive preliminary performance results from Conroe may spur a quicker than anticipated new build.

Using an opty 146 @ 2.7Ghz, and I'll be keeping it untill it won't do what I need anymore. By the look of things, thats going to be a long time. There may be a video card upgrade in the near future, but even thats not really necessary.

Edit: My kids box might get an X2 or a 165 if prices drop to $150 on either one.

ive got a 2.0ghz venice 3200+ .... which i will probably keep until K8L or something that will propel me to upgrade, conroe wont really do it for me... it has to be financially worth the upgrade (i havent had this one for a year yet)

i usually upgrade every 2 years or so

2.5ghz opty 170. Im gonna jump ship to nehalem or possibly conroe, not the first revision of it though. I plan to keep this rig for quite some time.

I'm currently using my old Northwood 2.4 with 1GB of pc1066 RDRAM... and it's served me well for many years. I'll probably be building a Conroe-based computer sometime this year.

I'm currently on a 3.0C P4 setup, but I just got an X2 4200+, which I plan on slapping into my waiting Asrock Dual-SATA mobo as soon as I have a full day of free time.

Currently on a AMD Athlon 64 3500 S939 OCed to 2.59 GHZ (might push further) and I plan on getting an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ after the prce drop to coincide with my 7900GT which I'll be getting in a week or two.

Current-- P4 3.6 (660)
Upgrade-- Conroe 6600 or 6700 (2.40/2.67)

The upgrade will come in Nov or Dec of this year as I try to upgrade at least once a year.

4400X2 @ 2.5Ghz, it's not getting upgraded for at least a year, more likely two. So K8L or Core 3 or whatever is around at the time 😉

Main machine - 3500+ AMD64. Would like to upgrade that to a X2 if the price is right.
The Borg - 6 * P4 3.0. For crunching BOINC.
Server - dual PIII - 600. Just want to add HDD's, 1 - 2 Tbytes.

Plan to add another 6 Conroe machines to The Borg when the quad cores come out, in mid 2007 or so.

The Borg is a simple setup - MoBo, CPU, memory and a small HDD. No case, fancy grahics or other extras.

Current: AMD 3700+
Next: Conroe something, unless AMD pull an ace of somewhere to beat it. Not upgrading until probably mid 2007.

Current - Celeron M 1.3GHz (stock).

Future - Uncertain. I'd really like an AFFORDABLE AM2 X2 Shuttle, but might build a Micro ATX box to hold me over until then.

If I wait for Conroe, I'd like to see the performance difference between their 2MB / 4MB CPU offerings before I buy. How far they overclock is another factor.

I currently have a p4 3.06 and even though the cpu is decent, the rest of the computer sux (except for a sweet audigy 2 zs sound card😀) I have integrated gfx and 512 RAM which lags in games. The rig in my sig is what I wanted to upgrade to... 4 months ago... now I'm looking at a 6400 conroe rig or a 3200+ am2 or a 3800+ x2 rig if I can manage it.

Current : Opty 148@2.75

Future : Upgrade to an X2(4600???) when prices drop. Maybe an Opty DC if I can find one. Year or 2 later, whatever is better of Conroe/AMD.

getting conroe E6600 or E6700, and prolly oc it to 4Ghz with WC + chiller , alth ough i need good ram + good mobo, ddr 900 prolly dfi infinity 975, with hacked driver sli can work on 975

EDIT: with tower 120, E6700 can do 4GHz easily

I'm still running this horrid Duron. By the end of the summer, I may have enough to build a new computer. I'll buy parts individually, and the first two I'll buy will be my AM2 mobo and an X2 3800+ 🙂 $169 for that X2 3800+, that's just sexy.

should've added a poll here....but here are the partial returns:

55% or 11/20 responders will get a conroe for their next build
45% or 9/20 will get an AM2/X2?opty system

28.6% (6/21) are AMD users keeping AMD for their next upgrade most of which are single core to X2 upgrades
23.8% (5/21) are Intel users staying with Intel (usually P4's going conroe)
19% (4/21) are AMD users going for an Intel setup (A64/opty going conroe)
14.3% (3/21) are Intel users switching to AMD (P3/4 to X2/opty)
the remaining 14% (3/21) have no plans to upgrade soon (usually X2/Opty users)

I'll try to update the results and see the continuing opinion here at AT especially as the reviews and roadmaps are updated. 🙂

Keep your responses flowing. Please include current system and upgrade plans.

I'm on XP 2400+, and I'll be with it for at least another year, hopefully two.

edit: when I do upgrade, it'll be to whatever is fastest at the time 🙂
