OP : here's a 360 pad that works REALLY well, that actually has a good D-pad :

http://www.ebay.com/itm/MICROSOFT-X...US_Video_Game_Controllers&hash=item5d4a97972e

Gamestop actually didn't make it, it was a Madcatz thing. And normally Madcatz sort of sucks, but everything about this one works extremely well.

As for my top and least faves :

Faves : SNES OEM, SNES Hori, SNES Ascii, Hori Mega Commmander (makes Genesis a joy), PS1/2/3/4, TG16, Dreamcast, Wii Classic, WiiU Pro, etc.

Blehs : N64, WiiMotes, XBOG (all), 360 Stock, Saturn

HATE : Coleco, Intelli, 5200, 7800, Jaguar, Gamecube, SMS, Genesis, basically anything that is extremely sloppy. If the D-pad isn't precise, or at least properly placed and sized, I'm not having it. And if it's a stick, please for the love of god have it be accurate and not feel like it's about to break from the moment you pick it up. The D-pad on the Gamecube is made for elves or fairies or something, it's laughably tiny. But at least it's shared right. The D-pad on the SMS and Genesis is beyond garbage. Mushy inaccurate with a total lack of feedback. The SMS one actually rebels against going smoothly horizontally or vertically, and actively wants to jump towards a diagonal action.

So sounds like I'll be the weirdo when I say N64? I thought it was awkward at first but when I got used to it, it made complete sense to me and I became really comfortable with it.

I liked the ascii controller too, but I think #2 is the X360 controller.

It probably helps I played N64 the most out of any console if I had to guess.

The worst part about the N64 controller was the analog stick. After a while it got so lose that it was almost unusable and forced me to buy a new one.

Atari 2600 controller. Worked on my 2600, 400, 800XL and never broke. I still have the original pair from 1978.
The 2600 controller is still may favourite design that shipped stock with a console, at least for those types of games.

However, I must admit it's easier to play Robotron: 2084 on a modern controller held with both hands than with two 2600 controllers that were just sitting on the table. You needed two hands for a single 2600 controller. One to hold the controller in place.

Ideally though I'd get something like this, which holds the two controllers in place.

P.S. I just replaced my broken Xbox 360 so that I could continue to play Robotron: 2084 in Xbox Live Arcade.

That was a damn good controller.

Funny thing is I got one by accident. A friend of mine broke one of my first party controllers and his mom said she would buy me a new one. I ended up with the ASCII pad since it was a little cheaper. Actually preferred it by far.

That's how I got my NES Advantage (another really good controller).

My favorite controller really depends on the type of game and what generation it is from.

Favorite gen 3 controller - NES. Pretty much the only choice.

Favorite gen 4 controller - SNES. The controller is perfect for these kinds of games. The last time I used a Genesis controller was when I was 4 or 5 so I don't really remember what it's like.

Favorite gen 5 controller - Nintendo 64. I must be one of the only people that like this controller. I love it that it has an add-on slot for the rumble pak and memory card. The analog stick sucks now, though. I wonder what the analog sticks were like when they were new.

Favorite gen 6 controller - The GameCube controller is great. I love the triggers on this controller. The only problems I have with it are the terrible d-pad and it not having 2 shoulder buttons. The d-pad sucking isn't that big of a deal for that console, though. I really only is a big problem when you use the Game Boy Player.

Favorite gen 7 controller - The DualShock 3 is my favorite controller for retro emulation and the Xbox 360 controller is my favorite for 3D games. They both have disadvantages. I don't like both analog sticks being on the bottom on the DualShock 3 and the triggers are convex instead of concave. My fingers are always slipping off of the triggers on it. It would have been nice for the analog sticks to be concave, but it's not that much of a problem. The Xbox 360 controller has the worst d-pad I've ever seen.

I always really liked the Atari 7800 controller. For typical side scrolling 8/16 bit games I prefer a stick and Sega had one for the Genesis that was really nice and tough as a tank.
