What are you waiting for, as far as upgrades?

Personally, I'm planning (barring a quick infusion of money or something) for the 6000+ level processors. That's 6GHz from Intel or a 3.5GHz processor from AMD.

I'd like a dual version of that, so it'll likely be late 2005 or 2006 or so before I buy again (barring money, of course).

How about you?

I'm waiting for the AMD move to socket 939 and the new video cards from ATI / Nvidia (buying the quickest)..... The wait is taking way to long 🙁

Mostly just on the GPU's don't get me wrong my 9500 Pro is great but the 128 bit memory interface just isn't cutting it as much I would like. Also some more memory would be nice. My CPU is going good and I am loving my 74 gig Raptor.

Im a beta tester for World of Warcraft and the game absolutely ROCKS even in beta format with lots of stuff unfinished. OOO baby blizzard are gonna destroy some lives with this one, but its not much of a system resource hog so you wont need the latest PCI express cards and CPUs to play it.

My general rule of thumb:

1) Increase processor speed when it doubles (or when the performance rating doubles) ie. upgrading from Athlon XP1600+ to my P4 2.6@3.2ghz => so next upgrade wont take place until I can get to at least 6400+

2) Videocard upgrade every 2 full generations. So my Radeon 8500 => R420 or NV40/45 is my next big upgrade

3) The rest are all toys like a better sound card, monitor etc. That's not relevant. Memory speed isn't important either to warrant any type of upgrade until a new CPU/MOBO Which wont happen till 6400+.

Cheers.

PS. Chaotic, whats your current setup?

I waiting probably till summer of 2005 to upgrade. Will probably go with Intel's next chipset after the Alderwood. I can then hopefully upgrade to a complete PCI Express and BTX system. By then the technologies should be more mature than they will be this year.

I am waiting for Socket 939 Athlon64's, PCI Express, BTX...of those I will probably grab a pair of 20" LCD monitors and enjoy dual monitor goodness!

I'm waiting till I graduate high school in 2005... by then hopefully I'll be able to get a nice A64 shuttle box with some new goodies.

Until then, I'm trying not to waste $ on my competent 2.4b@3GHz box

A limping dual 1800+

It's a dually system, but one of the sockets is dead. 1.25GB of memory, SCSI, and a Radeon 9700 Pro

BTX gets a big "meh" from me. Main advantage is cooling and that is not a major issue for any modding enthusiast who could easily customize cooling on his/her own. No reason to wait for that. Its mostly intended to address issues from system vendors and such.

Yeah, from what I've heard, BTX just sounds like a waste. I spent $200 on a case, I'd hate to render it useless by a stupid switch.
