I had Windows 98 Plus! and used that but now that I have Windows 2000 what should I use. Is there any way to take the files in Plus! off my other system(s)? What do you use?

WinRar, the power-archiver for professionals

I've used WinZip, WinAce and Power-archiver (terrible rip-off of WinZip!) before I tried WinRar. WinRar is simply the best archiver and .rar files are simply the most safe archive format in existance.

Good old UNIX zip and unzip... Learn the command line, it is more flexible and poerful... :) Been using command line based archivers suck as PK-ARC, PK-ZIP, LHArc and ARJ since the heyday of the late 80's...

Am I dating myself??? :)

I'm using WinRar for (almost) all of my compressed formats. Sometimes I use WinAce when I have to use .ace files.

I love it ;) WinRAR can compress to RAR (much better than Zips..) or Zips if you need them...it can also read/decompress about 15 formats. WinRAR is an excellent tool, very simple and intuitive to use (I actually like the interface much better than WinZip or *shudders* WinAce), but at the saem time very powerful. I actually own a license, well worth the $30 or whatever it was.

Another vote for winRAR...

One little program uncompresses everything I need...

Hey IamDavid:

I have WinRAR 2.71 and it will decompress/view Ace files (or they are on the list, I don't have anything to test it with at the moment). Maybe you just don't have the newest version?

It can only compress to .RAR and .Zip, but that's all you really need. RAR is an excellent archive type, and Zip in universally compatible.

If you are interested, 2.71 can decompress/view: RAR, ZIP, CAB, ARJ, LZH, ACE, TAR, GZip, UUE

(Ok...so 15 was a bit of an exageration...but ARJ, LZH, ACE, even the unix formats, and the CAB ms files)

Downloaded Powerarchiver and never looked back - it's winzip but much better and handles every format your likely to encounter.

It's also free!

WinAce. It does everything WinZip and WinRAR does, and then some...

I really suggest you try it

I've used WinZip for years but after reading this thread I'm going to give Power Archiver a try.
