Recently most of my music listening is in my kitchen. I stream Spotify via a Chromecast Audio to a Logitech Z623 and it sounds way better than any of my 5.1 setups for music.

What do your 5.1 setups consist of?

My upstairs setup is all Polk RTi (RTi6 fronts, RTi4 rear) with a CSi5 center powered by a Denon AVR 1713 (the sub is a crappy PSW125). My downstairs setup is more RTis (RTiA1 rear and RTiA3 front) with a CSI A6 center powered by a Yamaha RX-V577. The RTis bookshelves are great for home theater and movies but so-so for music.

I still have my old but good Logitech Z5500 for PC gaming and movie watching. I sometimes use it for music but not very often. Its a decent all rounder but I use headphones more often than not.

I have a Sony DN1050 Receiver with QAcoustics 2000i 5.1 speakers and both movies and music sounds awesome. Both are reputed to compete with similar hardware at twice the price. Not bad for £1000 Inc 12 guage wires.

I tend to use DLNA to stream music files over to the receiver for it to decode instead of my computer. For some reason the receiver handles it better, especially when expanding a stereo signal to all the speakers.

I kind of prefer my old setup for gaming, it sounds a bit livelier for music too but not as detailed.

I'd previously frankensteined 2 almost identical wharfdale mini hifi's that cost about £40 each for front and rear speakers. A denon CD player with one working speaker that I found left from a previous occupier which I used for the centre. And a Logitech sub from an X-530 which made everything sound bombastic.

I'd originally got the Logitech system for half price (£50) and thought about using that on its own, but I found I was losing a lot of detail in the satellites so I doubled them with the rest of the speakers. I eventually got rid of the satellites due to the slight distortion I was getting compared to the wharfdales.

Not bad at all for £130. The difference in sound between this and my current is definitely not £870's worth, but the new system is more detailed, subtle and refined.

I've been listening to Bob Marley's Legend from HDtracks in 192k thru either a set of Sony SS-M7s driven by a Pioneer Elite avr and an Energy Power 12 sub or at my desk a Soundblaster ZXR with Sparkos 3602's for the mains and 3601's for the buffers with well dampened Sony MDR-Z7s. I love the sound of both the M7 and the Z7. Wow, just realized they are both model 7, the ironing!

When I have the chance I will open up the M7s and mod them with some better cabling and if I can get my hands on some, a refill with twaron angel hair.

Almost forgot. I bought this little guy for my garage gym. I didn't expect much but I was totally surprised, lol. Its loud as hell and actually sounds pretty great. I got it from best buy with gift cards and only spent $100.00. Sickass bargain right there. I Bluetooth Pandora from my phone and it kicks ass-O-plenty.

Is it odd that everytime I see a boombox, I think rain and that movie Say Anything?

That is the epitome of cool with a boombox, you can't define a boombox anymore than that. It's all downhill from there.

No. You sound like an audiophile the way you are blaspheming and mocking my epic Best Buy grade stereo. This thing kicks ass, but I am a simple man.
As you can see in the pic below, the stereo is mounted nicely on the wall in front of my squat rack.
I only needed a simple radio that would blast pleasing airwaves of love directly into my face as I squat in front of it.

Only love...

Look at that thing! I remember the envy I felt as a young kid when I saw those things. I remember how excited I was when I got my own. I never had a "high end" one like in that pic. I got some smaller versions that were still sweet for a young kid. Those were some days. Haha look at that damn thing.

Yea, I had a small one as a kid too. I was so envious of the big ass ones. I had a kiddo turntable too. I wore the needle out on that thing lol.

For listening in the car and mobile (most of my listening), I use a combination of Spotify and Google Play Music. I use Google to listen to the tons of ripped CDs I've uploaded. But Spotify's allure is strong, especially with the paid family plan (6 different accounts for $15 a month is a great value for us). If I'm listening at home in a non-critical situation (cooking a meal, working out, messing around in the garage), I just use either service and a Chromecast audio set up.

If I want to sit down at home and really listen, use older Squeezebox Touches to play flac files from a media server. I'd like to get rid of those and just use the Chromecast Audios to play the local flac files but I haven't sat down to figure out what needs to be done. My primary critical home listening setup is based around Aperion Audio Verus Grand speakers, supplemented by a Hsu VTF-15H sub (with a Denon x3000 AVR).

I have these holey circle things attached to the sides of my face. They work decently, though not as good as when they were newer.

I generally use my PC to listen to music, with a Asus Xonar STX soundcard, Daytom APA-150w amp and Dayton BR-1 reference speakers.

I live in a apartment so the computer setup is perfect, when i want to annoy the neighbors i fire up my Harmon Kardon 3490 paired with a pair of Polk Monitor 60's. Which i stream music to through my PS3.
