What are you gonna do?

Ok, here's the scenario. Economy hits the crapper, business' shutdown. Everyone is out of work.

It's fend for yourself time. No electricity, no gas, no running water.

Two questions:

1. What are you going to do to survive?

2. If you have prepared, what have you done so far?

I'm not a crazy survival list, just a realistic person. I saw Katrina and I know if things get "really bad" here in the US, it won't be pleasant.

Discuss.

So you'd go to the relatively less shitty place? Because Mexico is at a pretty shitty state right now.

No, see that's where you're wrong.

Here's the scenario:

1. SHTF
2. You have Food
3. I have guns/ammo
4. I take your food
5. Now I have food
6. You don't
7. Profit

I'm trying to think of a scenario in which that would happen on a long-term basis and I can't think of anything.

That's the problem, people think it won't happen.

If the business's that run these things, go bankrupt...who is going to run it?

It's not that remote of possibility.

I'd rather be there than Michigan.

Another businessman who sees there is a huge demand for electricity, gas, and running water.

The key is probably to be as self sufficient as possible. If you're in the states then chances are it's hot, so you can just grow all your own stuff all year round, assume basic tools are no longer available as all the companies are out of business, so you pretty much have to do like the old days for any construction work and build a log house. If you do have tools, better hope they never break, and they probably will because they were most likely made in china.

That, and lot of guns, electric fences, bomb shelter, idealy you want a concrete wall around your whole property but probably can't afford or have the means to do it.

Though, beauty is, if everyone is in the same boat as you, any effort you do to protect your property will be very hard to circumvent.

I would not want to see SHTF though, imagine all of US just a big chaos looting and killing party and fight for survival. But in reality this world has gone insane, and that could pretty much happen regardless of the economy. All the bad guys just have to all get together and plan it. Scary when you think about it.

short of like the black plague or nuclear attacks, what's going to make the entire electrical grid, plumbing system, etc go offline permanently?

I know they aren't in a stable environment, but if what the OP talks about happens in America, it is going to get crazy... the gangs with the biggest guns and most people will pretty much feed off of other peoples hard work and such

I have guns and ammo, but I know there is always gunna be someone else out there with more of both.

a mix of weaponry and canned food = win

...and toilet paper. no matter how primitive we get, toilet paper must survive.

The lack or merely a lengthy halt in oil, communications or, transportation. The grid doesn't have to go offline permanently, just long enough for you to die.

Yeah, cuz canned food and toilet paper grow on shrubberies in the wild.

If all businesses fail shit will not go to complete chaos. Remember, money is made by humans, and is *not* a requirement. Now I know that it's sometimes a far fetched ability, but I feel that Americans could still work for no money in a shut off (borders closed) world in poverty society. I personally would work for no money, to run water systems, farm goods, get oil for fuel, ect ect. But maybe I'm wrong..maybe Americans maybe won't do it.

The problem is not that Americans won't do it, the problem is enough Americans with the right knowledge won't do it because they're more concerned with there own or families welfare. If more Americans were capable of seeing the larger picture, we wouldn't be in our current financial predicament.

My supplies of food, water, ammo/weapons will sustain and protect me long enough to survive longer than the 98% of people who don't have anything. Once those things run out, I can go hunting to sustain and gather water from rivers/my roof.

Just wait until something bad happens and people go APE SHIT trying to get stuff. Does anyone not remember Katrina or the Gas Shortages in the 70s?

Image no gas for a month....or 3? People would go FING CRAZY.

Me and a few friends have a plan if stuff goes wrong, we'll be pooling our resources and we will survive. Just spend 30 minutes thinking about what you do if you couldn't goto the grocery store anymore?

We won't have to run to the grocery store when the stuff goes bad, cause we'll be set.

You know, I wasn't very old (7-13), but I was still there when the shit hit the fan in Bulgaria in the early 90s, and its not as dramatic as you make it out to be. In fact, what happened there - GDP contraction of at least 25-30%, massive unemployment, several hundred % inflation for several years in a roll, a lot of newly-formed organized crime, etc, isn't even close to the worst case scenario for what might happen here.

The boring truth is, life gets tough and people still do the same things they've always done.

You have some good ideas but, you're planning for the short run expecting the world to return to normal within a short time months or a few years. If the shit hits the fan, infrastructure of every kind will suffer a cascade failure. Who will feed, clothe, shelter and protect you 10 or 15 years down the road? Who will teach your children? Who will they meet and marry? A viable community is the only possible long term solution
