Is Siri iPhone 4S dependent or just an iOS update? I don't feel like watching the entire keynote to find out.

It's iPhone 4S-only as far as I know.

Half expected at least the iPad 2 to be supported, but it's not... or at least not in the GM.

Plus Apple is calling Siri Assistant a "beta" at this point in time.

My guess is that Apple will take Siri for a test drive with the 4S to see people's reaction, then if it flies, then they will finally bring it to other devices on iOS 5.1 or 5.2 something. Otherwise, I don't see how Voice Control needs a dual-core processor to work efficiently.

I mean... hell, we have had Voice Control since forever in iOS, and Android has had it forever too. Most of Siri's processing is done on the server-side and the original Siri app obviously didn't require a dual-core phone to work right.

No sale for me. I'm just going to buy a used 4 and hope for better next year. I was really hoping for a larger screen. After playing with my wifes 4 I am struggling to see the upside of a dual core other than Siri. Cam upgrade is nice but the 4 is still rather good. I'm just not seeing enough to get me to lock into a contract. I'll wait for next year and hope for a larger screen and LTE.

The more I think about it the less disappointed I am. Really the only thing lacking that I wanted is a larger screen. LTE isn't in my area and would be surprised if it is when the next one comes out so that is really a moot point. I really like the design and since I don't have a 4 it will still be new to me. In the end the money will be the same more or less. Spend $350 this year or next year on the 5.(4S estimated selling price and retail of the 5 more or less be around $350 which is about what a used 4 is going for and I get a better phone in the meantime, hey I guess this Apple resale value is a good thing.) Now I need to go do some research on insurance and this new Applecare+. Have the BB insurance on my wifes phone but I would rather not pay monthly for mine and just get it in one shot.

well the keynote came out on itunes faster than previous ones, within the same day lol

first half was boring, but the improvement in the camera for the phone was pretty good.

It's funny how the price for the 4 and 4s are the same when the storage is equal.

Has anybody gone through the process of buying the phone and switching carriers (ie T to VZ)?

I have AT&T now and my contract is expired. I want to switch to Sprint and get a 4S. Can I even preorder it by doing that?

How would this be different than just buying any phone from a different carrier and porting the number?

you buy the phone for another carrier, say you want to port the number. when you activate it automatically cancels your current carrier account. you get a final bill if you owe anything

This is exactly how i feel. No phone is scrutinized as much as the iPhone. No other phone has the kind of constant stream of pessimism from tech sites and news sites as the iPhone. Issues with iPhone are over blown all over the media, issues with a Samsung are never spoken of. Thats how it works.

People just dream up that they are disapointed with the new phone, but in reality we are only missing and larger screen and a case redeisgn, both of which i dont want. I prefer PPI to size all day long on a mobile device, and i dont want a new case design. The 4S is in the top ranking as far as smartphones go as far as im concerned, despite the, lets be honest, propaganda they post on Gizmodo/Yahoo

I also dont think tech specs are enough to define a phone. There are always those people with, IMO, shallow minds who think faster ghz = better phone. The iPhone has always been about user experiance, and interface, and ease of use. If the iPhone falls short on CPU/MP performance, i still think it is a better phone. Im looking forward to seeing a CPU/GPU comparision between the Galaxy II and the 4S, Engadet says the S G II is faster, but i dont know if i can trust them, i want to see a FLOPS comparison.

Well, I think I got something out of yesterday: iOS 5 GM.

It's a dream post-jailbreak. Not only is the notification system far superior, it runs a lot smoother on my iPhone 4, too.

Siri doesn't look like it'll be simple to enable, though. There is no trace of it anywhere in the firmware.

Bummer. I've been running iOS5 since the first beta and it looks and feels a lot better now

The GM does fix some annoying crashes in Safari and WebView, plus it improves graphics performance from what I can see. Some apps seem to still run into troubles, though, but I don't doubt it'll all be ironed out over the next few weeks as updates are approved.

Now I feel like the 4S is going to be a tough sale for Apple since the 4 runs so well.

Looks like iPhone 4 cases will fit the iPhone 4S. Looking at this battery case:

http://www.amazon.com/BOOST-Case-Pro...dp/B0044TM0OC/

The reason why I'm a little wary is that people were reporting slight issues such as the mute switch being partly covered. This could occur if Apple moved it a little bit for the Verizon iPhone 4 compared to its position on the AT&T iPhone 4. Monoprice does have cases that specifically list AT&T and Verizon in the case's name. If it did move slightly, I assume the cutout for the rocker switch would just be slightly larger to accommodate both positions.

Also, as a FYI... Monoprice also has charging cases like that. :D

Siri doesn't look like it'll be simple to enable, though. There is no trace of it anywhere in the firmware.

That's what I expected. Although, I was thinking that it might be possible for them to extract it out of the iP4S's IPSW. It would all depend on how deeply ingrained it is. Just because it's built into the OS doesn't mean it isn't something like a Windows service that runs in the background. It may also require replacing a few other files to enable the microphone icon on the keyboard or even the home button shortcut.

I don't delve much into the iOS hacking scene, so I'm not sure what exactly they can do with the image files.

I think that is where siri comes to play....For those who must have it the 4s is currently the only option.

The story with the iPhone 4S is obviously all about the software, and while you might be bummed about not seeing a major external hardware revision, you should know that Apple has introduced some serious new features into the language of the iPhone.

Most notable of those features is the device’s “personal assistant,” otherwise know as Siri, which is a voice-controlled secretary of sorts which translates commands and questions into human language answers and actions. I had a chance to use this feature during our brief demo, and if I wasn’t blown away during Scott Forstall’s presentation on stage, this definitely changed my mind.

Siri is unique in the fact that you can ask it familiar, natural language questions like “show me movie theaters in the area” and it will return a real, readable answer and a list sorted by proximity. You can also say things like “wake me up at 6AM,” and it will set your alarm. But basic tasks like that are only half the story.

Siri works on the idea of logic and context, so when you say you want it to wake you up, you’re starting a conversation with the phone which it is actively following. If you want to sleep in a bit, you can say something like “change my alarm time,” and it knows what you’re talking about — it will prompt you for a new time.

Even more impressive is its ability to work out your calendar events. I asked the phone to schedule a meeting at 3:30 PM, only to be told that I already had a meeting at 4. And would I like to change my other meeting time? Yes Siri, I would.

Taken one by one, this might not sound like much, but in use I found it kind of staggering. I wasn’t speaking slowly (as Scott did during the event) or even trying very hard to sound clear. There was background noise. But it really worked, and worked well. Some of my requests were more specific (“Show me theaters that are playing Moneyball“) and didn’t return the results I wanted. Siri knew I said Moneyball and seemed to know it was a movie (it capitalized the title), but couldn’t tell me where it was playing.

The software is still in beta, even at launch, so I expect connections like that will be made sooner or later.

Otherwise, the performance of the phone seemed very snappy compared with the older model, though I wouldn’t say the iPhone 4S appears to be obviously faster if you’re just darting around the homescreen and opening apps. Siri did seem to speedily pull up answers and forms for text messages and the like — but it wasn’t exactly blowing my mind.

Other iOS 5 improvements were obviously on-board, and they do make the iPhone feel significantly more modern. Particularly, the new notifications are a welcome break from the previous, annoying interstitials which iOS offered.

Everything I saw today, however, is the kind of feature which you need to live with to fully appreciate. At least, that was my strong impression. I think that in the forthcoming days and weeks, we’ll have an opportunity to explore those features much more deeply. In the meantime, you should check out Paul Miller’s thoughts on Siri, and keep your browser tuned to TIMN for information that will be both exciting as well as mentally and spiritually enriching.

No Siri in Canada or Japan.. It is on the website for the US, UK, AU, FR, and DE.. but not Canada or Japan.. I'm guessing it has to do with French and English in Canada.. not sure about Japan though... maybe just haven't optimized it for Japanese yet I guess.

Pretty frustrating for us English speaking Canadians.

Apple should have/needs to offer iPod like color options.
There is no reason we should be stuck with black/white.

Wanted me to ship to the uk. He told me this AFTER the action ended

And the problem is?.....

I shipped my Nook to the UK no problem. Shipping costs a little extra - buyer pays anyways. Since the pound is worth more than the dollar, you can get a lot more money by selling to someone in the UK.
