Ended up hosting some family, so I made a handful of cocktails. Corpse Reviver #2, Boulevardier, Cosmopolitan, Jack Rose, Paloma... and then there were plenty of craft winter ales. Not a bad evening at all.
whiskey. keeps me warm when its freezing out.

I had planned on a pub crawl Friday night and then a Halloween party on Saturday, but apparently, I live with someone who hates fun and wants to ruin my life and she nixed both those ideas literally seconds before we went out. Ended up opening a nice bottle of wine and drinking alone. =(
Do you need her to hold your hand when you go out? Grow a pair of balls if you don't like her and move on.
Life's too short to be miserable.

Maybe it sucks. Never had that. Good whiskey and cheap whiskey aren't in the same ballpark(with very few exceptions). They might as well be completely different things.

Temper it with water to cut down some of the initial alcohol burn and let it rest for a bit so some of the alcohol can evaporate; makes it smoother to drink neat. You can always add ice too. But personally, I prefer rye for mixing. If I'm drinking whiskey neat, give me bourbon, or maybe Irish or Scotch if the mood strikes. The spicy quality of rye that makes it so harsh when drinking it straight makes for a killer flavor profile in a Manhattan or Sazerac. Next time you have some, make a simple Old Fashioned; dissolve a teaspoon of sugar in a teaspoon of water, add 2 dashes Angostura bitters, 2 ounces of rye whiskey, and twist a lemon rind over the top of the glass and drop it in. Add one very large ice cube if you have it (three medium ice cubes will work, but you don't want it to dilute too quickly) and sip slowly. It's delightful.
Thanks for the notes re: Rye, I'll try my rye based whiskeys in OF's instead of straight up.
I've been whoring it around here lately, but give Pikesville rye a try if you can find it out your way. It's super cheap(~$12 a bottle), and has a great mellow flavor.
dude, I put that shit on a fat ice cube and let it water down. I got to the end some 30 minutes later and I was still making the whiskey face.

It's funny, cause I haven't had the High West, and just looking around at some reviews, everyone mentions it being a super smooth sipper. So maybe you just don't like rye whiskey (no shame in that). But I'd definitely try a couple mixed drinks to see how it fares.
The entry is explosive with a fantastic spice that hits your palate right out of the gate.
The review I linked to touched on it...
Except for my unrefined taste buds, "explosive with a fantastic spice" means "harsh as fuck". It's my neighbors bottle, I just asked for a taster.
