You must not buy groceries.

Food prices are the highest they've been relative to average income in 50 some years.

As I said, I buy food once a week and haven't spent over $60/week in 2-3 years. I don't buy cheap shit, I just don't buy more than I need.

You must rarely eat at home. My bare minimum is 160 a week now for just me and has nearly doubled from 6 years ago. Granted, I'm a body builder so it's a lot of fresh meat, but still.

There is no denying food prices have shot up.

Holy crap, I don't spend that much in a month on food.

Are you single? because $20 can't you much at the grocery store today unless you just buy Ramen.

I spend about $65 a week on groceries when i shop at market basket. When i go to shaws, that $65 turns to $110.

gibson lives near boston

Gib: food prices in new england are basicially 2x as expensive as anywhere else simply because of location and the fact that 90% of all food has to be shipped there, its worse in maine

I drive slower on the interstate <on the right lane>, brownbag for lunch, don't buy as much dvd movies as I used to <over 1000 collection>, pay more attention to budget as I used to <everything is subject to be cut except stuffs like rent, health insurance, etc.>, use coupons as much as I can, cut back on going out and buy new clothes and shoes <can't believe how much clothes I have in the closets>.

I am also cut back on soda from 1 a day to maybe 1 a week and buy them with coupon <$1 off from 12 pk at Target>.

I am aiming to save about 50% of my take home income and buy a new house within 5 years.

And how much do you spend, and where do you live?

Prices are about 20% higher in Duluth than my hometown in Minnesota. At the beginning my first year of college I was spending $40 a week. I probably could have brought it down a little but my parents were going to pay for the first year as they did for my sister.

Now that I'm actually trying to save, I just finished my second year and I was spending around $70 a week on groceries. I'm not fat - as a matter of fact, I'm trying to lose weight I gained due to a medication, and so far I'm succeeding. Right now i'm 6' and 165 lbs - I want to get down to 150 or so.

Cutting costs wherever we can. Drive slower, seek out cheapest gas, I commute 80miles a day so alternate transportation isn't an option. Always look for sales at the grocery store, bring lunch to work, the price of gas is effecting our lives on several levels and not just at the pump.

I have cheap bagged cereal for breakfast.
I have PB&J, a single-serve applesauce & (yogurt or celery or something) for lunch. Water to drink. Applesauce is about $1.50 for 6, the PB&J for a MONTH is about $8-10.
I have pasta or rice, meat and 1/2 can of veggies for dinner. A bag of chicken breasts has about 10 pieces and is maybe $6-7, canned veggies are about 75 cents, bag of rice or box of pasta is a few bucks and lasts a while. Sometimes I'll "splurge" and get a few pounds of "reduced for quick sale" meat for a few bucks, separate it out, wrap it in foil and freeze it. A couple pounds of ground beef goes a long way in 4 or 5 meals (it's easy when you only have one mouth to feed.) and usually yields some leftovers. Water to drink.

If you have a friend that likes the same types of produce as you, split the costs and split the amount because most people end up trashing a lot of it before it goes bad.

Buy grocery store brands. I know some things aren't always EXACTLY the same, but a lot of it is. There are only so many ways you can make the certain products anyway.

Portioning FTW. If you notice you polish off a bag of chips in a day or two, maybe you shouldn't buy those chips because you clearly can't control yourself with them. Some people drink more soda in a day than they drink water and when you think about it, it's pretty disgusting.

Alcohol is expensive. Some people like drinking from the moment they get home from work until they go to bed. It may only be a few beers or a few glasses of wine, but when a case is almost $20/wk that can kill your wallet if you're penny pinching.

Look at the labels on products. Some people will gobble down an entire box of mac and cheese but it was probably meant for a family of 4.

Avoid vending machines like the plague. It may be convenient, but there's a cost for convenience.

If you have an area where grocery stores are right next to each other, I've noticed that even chain stores will have lower prices on some goods just to get people into their store as opposed to the other guy. I walk to one and if the prices seem high on something (IE Milk) I go to the other to get it.

IGNORE COUPONS. Some of them might be decent, but most of them just get you to buy something you wouldn't normally buy to save a few cents on it. Companies use coupons as a lure to get people to try out new products and in the end the savings are negligible. Most people commit to buying a product once the coupon is cut out... which is well before they know the actual price.

I am, by no means, a skinny guy, but I've been living this way for about 5 months and I've never thought I was gonna die of starvation, never went to bed hungry, but I've still shed a few pounds from not eating like a damn glutton.

Keeping it at 70 on the freeway
Acceleration under 3000 RPM
Buying food in bulk at Costco
Replacing our battery supply with rechargeables (high cost up front, savings over the long term)
Planting a small garden this year
Having Xcel energy install a saver switch on the central AC (15% off elec bill for 4 months)
Replacing bulbs with CFLs where I can
Packing a lunch for less than 2$ a day instead of eating out for 6-10$ a day

Its nice that most of those things are enviro friendly too, but the pocket book is el numero uno.
