For example if there is a group of people playing a sport together, what are the different options for building online communities? I'm thinking that there should be blogs available or the organizer or others to post messages, people can subscribe to alerts on those via email, text message, etc, and people shold be able to post comments of course. Maybe a calendar.

The thing I can think of would be community server, but in the scenario I'm thinking, no one should have to go through the trouble of finding a host and installing or configuring any software. Are there places where you can just sign up and instantly get a community portal available, with ability for new users to register, and for someone to dole out permissions, and administrate the whole thing?

for example, if you wanted to have a community for bodybuilders, you might build a website where bodybuilders can post and read messages and things? sort of like a bodybuilder forum?

Yes, that is one possibility. But I'm looking for a list of all possible options of online community building. Mainly want to see what web 2.0 has contributed to this.

The online version of our paper has community forums and blogs for most towns within its circulation.

You should organize a small online community to investigate all possible options of online community building.

Well of course not. You haven't organized the small online community to investigate them yet silly!

blog or forum are the ones I would think of. If you want to get all pop culture "Web 2.0" shit then make a Facebook page and a Myspace page....

just don't post about it here...

..having spent lots of time in small rural communities, the volunteer fire dept.was always a center of gravity.
