This mobo has 4 onboard usb ports. and i added 2 front panel usb from the case.

This is a fresh install of WinXP.

in device manager, i see:
- standard enhanced pci to usb host controller (irq 3)
- unknown device
- usb root hub
- usb root hub
- usb root hub
- usb root hub
- VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller (irq 5)
- VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller (irq 5)
- VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller (irq 11)

The thing that concerns me is the unknow device. i didnt plug anything into the usb ports yet, and winxp says i have an unknown device??!

i also have
- geforce 4 4200 video card (agp)
- ati radeon 7200 video card (pci) on irq 5
- pci modem (HSP56) on irq5 com6. (winxp picked those settings, not me.) physically, it's located in pci slot #3.

(i'm running dual monitor.)

What are all these usb things, and why do i have an unknown device?

THX

You need to install usb2 drivers for that board - winxp doesn't have them.

They're on the install cd for the motherboard.

(I like this board btw; mine's been running for over two years trouble free now).

you need the usb2 drivers. Since the usb2 controller is not MS, the dirvers are proprietary and not on your winxp cd.

if you don't have the motherboard cd, they should be online; f you can't find them, I can send them to you.

4in1 doesn't do usb2. there is a usb2 driver available from www.ecsusa.com; make sure you know which rev. of the board you have.

There's no problem with the chip and sp2, mine works fine.

ok.. k7vta3 v6

got the drives for winxp. but when i run setup, it starts to run, then nothing happens.

i manually updated the pci to usb host controller. now it says via usb 2.0 enhanced host controller. but the unknown device is still there :(

i also cant find drivers for usb root hub and via rev 5 or later usb universal host controller.

are there drivers for those 2 things???

Hi, Remove the UNKNOWN DEVICE from Sys Mgr. Reboot and see if it comes back. It may fix itself. If it wont go away and you have no problems, X it out. Some day it may fix itself. Jim

You can install the usb2 drivers in 'update drivers' in device manager you just need to unzip the drivers folder (it sounds like you did that). I had the same problem with the setup utility crashing when I tried to install the drivers with the setup program, after updating to sp2.

I have rev 5.0 of the board, but I think it's the same usb drivers. I would try once more, removing all of the usb devices, and see what happens. Also, if you have any usb headers (front usb ports, etc), I would disconnect all of those, then remove the usb devices, then reconnect them once you're rid of all 'unkown devices' showing.

Try both - I can't remember, though I would have guessed it was called 'enhanced usb controller'. Let it try windows update, and the unzipped driver folder.

I had a great deal of trouble running this board with windows 98se, btw, just because of usb2, but not too many hassles with XP.

it could be - i have a usb/sound front panel, that plugs into usb ports (not headers) so I just assumed it was that.

I did not install drivers for the usb composite device, at any rate.
