I went to target to buy my dad a portable DVD player (~$500) and when the guy went to ring me up, he put the player near this black pad labeled "Checkpoint", not on top of it, just near it, and started to scan my other items ( I had like 5 other ones.) by the time he reached the dvd player it must have been sitting there for about 20-30 seconds. I would have thought nothing of it but when I heard that it makes a whooshing sound, I must have started to pay attention because i'm usually spaced-out. I was thinking that it was some type of magnetic pad that does something to bar codes and stuff so that they don't go off when you leave the store. He didn't need to use it for my device because all he needed was the infared lazer scanner gun thing. I'm a little worried that it may have done some damage to the lcd or the player itself. I can't check to see if it works, until the holiday season. I also can't stop thinking about it seeing as it is a pretty expensive device for a present, I just don't want it to be damaged. Can u guys help me have some piece of mind?

Thanks do0ds!

It disables magnetic security strips so you don't set off the alarms when you leave the store..

If you're really that worried, take it back and buy it closer to christmas. I never buy expensive electronics more then 90 days (or whatever their warranty is) before Christmas, that way if it is broken, its not a hassel to get it fixed. Really expensive stuff I'll buy within the store's return policy on that item so I can take it back there.

It's a pad that activates the mind control device sold in most of these B&M stores. These control devices only seem to actually work in 1 of 25 devices, so you're 1/25ths safe. Don't worry. ;)

I guess, but is it appropriate to use near electronics? I mean, if clothes or something have it, it's understandable.

Thanks, more help appreciated.

I work at walmart, never had a problem with them destroying any electornics.

Whats really fun though is that we have sheets of those little stickers so we put them in peoples coats we don't like and then the door greeters go anal on them when they walk out:D:D:D

Casio, if you're really concerned, I'd just open it and test it. Then package it up nicely and no harm done. If it doesn't work, then return it.

These devices cannot cause damage to items, with the possible exception of magnetic media (VHS tapes, floppies). Your player is perfectly fine. This of course does not take into account the mind control properties of the unit.

That's what it is, demagnetizer.

Don't worry though, Target's 90 day return policy has you covered through January.

If you see a post directly above from NikolausStaleyMalcolm, then your brain control device is functioning properly.

*Edit...hmm....I think mine just broke.

People use to always ask me that at my parent's store. I'd just tell them it's a scanner. They still wouldn't understand it's purpose but usually they stopped asking questions.

It sucks how much money we have to spend to prevent people from stealing. I hate thieves.
