What are these cables coming from my case?

Hey,

I have an ASUS P4P800-e Deluxe, and an nzxt guardian case (i'm sure you haven't heard of it).

There is one set of headers coming from the case that I'm pretty sure is the front USB....

The cables are like this

Vcc1 Data1- Data1+ <-- These 3 headers are in 1 unit
Vcc2 Data2- Data2+ <-- These 3 headers are in 1 unit

Ground
Ground
Shield

(I beleive there maybe 1 more ground, I'm not too sure).

I looked in my manual, and the
USB_56 is arranged like so:

XXXXX
XXXX

Where X symbolizes a place to connect stuff.

For refence:

12345
6789

1 = USB+5V
2 = USB_P6-
3 = USB P6+
4 = GND
5 = NC

6 = USB+5V
7 = USB_P5
8 = USB_P5+
9 = GND

Not too sure how to connect these. Are these cables even front USB cables?

A quick hint would be greatly appreciated.

They do sound like USB headers you can use to connect the from USB ports to.

I suggest you double check against the manual, available here.

The first thing I did was check the manual ;P.
After googling around, it seems as though the names that they use on many motherboards do not match the names that they use on the case.

And, you don't connect the SHIELD header to your motherboard, I have no idea why they leave an extra header-connector-thing (number 5, see above).

Thanks, I got it working now.

I have no idea about the Shield connector either; I usually leave it dangling and nothing bad ever comes of it. I've heard of folks splicing the two Shield wires together and then being able to use both on the single Shield pin on the motherboard, but that's a little extreme for my liking.

You can leave shield dangling - it's redundant. The two grounds are all connected to the shield anyway.

Make darn sure to connect everything else properly or you WILL smoke something.

1 = USB+5V (VCC1)
2 = USB_P6- (Data-1)
3 = USB P6+ (Data+1)
4 = GND (GND1)
5 = NC (Shield)

6 = USB+5V (VCC2)
7 = USB_P5 (Data-2)
8 = USB_P5+ (Data+2)
9 = GND (GND2)

Lol.

Originally, I didn't connect it right. I put it upside down
1 = USB+5V (Data+1)
2 = USB_P6- (Data-1)
3 = USB P6+ (VCC1)

And I connected my flash drive on to it, nothing happened. Then I realized I put it upside down and fixed it.

(nothing burned, and my flash drive still works 😉).
