Well I for one say that if we are going to engage in imaginary racial guilt purging we should at least make it a proposal of 10 or even 100 million. If I'm going to seek phony redemption why not do it in a big way. 5 million, piff.

I also think anybody who lives in the South who has not voted GQP since their Southern Strategy to entice over all the racists should get reparations for having to live with such racist regressive shitty people all this time. I don't care what color or ethnicity you are. You had to live with GQP racists, you deserve something.

It's completely cracked. But it's a recommendation from a committee which no doubt consists of bleeding edge extremists. If it becomes law, then the thread will be worth revisiting.

If people really care about making black people whole, money may be an option but there are a ton more options that are better in my opinion. Anything from free college education (or trade school) to lower interest rates for homes, to more and better investment into public schools and community centers. More money doesn’t really fix the problems our racist past and racist policies caused for blacks people.

Money would solve it just fine, but anything that is a blanket benefit going out to everyone of a specific skin color is politically a terrible idea right now. We're better off strenghtening our social safety net, so that any new policies are to benefit the poor, not just one group specifically which even includes plenty of people who aren't poor.

That’s not reparations though, that’s just good policy. You will have to explain how giving black people money addresses the systemic racist policies that have had decades of negative results. Unless that dollar amount is something significant like $100k plus per black person I don’t see how it will make them whole.

I am opposed to any kind of reparations.
Widespread funding of Basic Income and other necessary programs would benefit the poorest among us the most. If that happens to be black people, I am fine with them seeing a greater share as befits their situation. But our policy should be less targeted and more broad in order to achieve that. When the solutions are inclusive, they garner more support and help more people.

Does that include Tulsa, OK?

I ask that because the slaughter of its black residents and the destruction of homes and businesses seemed pretty targeted

Yes but this thread is addressing a proposal to pay them $5 million apiece. Even at one-fifth of that, it's plenty.

What you suggested is all money or money equivalents anyway.

It's all money, but instead of just giving money, they're making something essential cost less. Either way, it amounts to the same thing.

And all of it is totally non-viable politically right now. We can't get away with paying benefits out based solely on skin color.

I confess, I didn’t read the proposal only the responses in this thread. 5 million is certainly more than enough😱

That being said, 5 million is a lot of money but unless it goes towards righting the wrongs of the past I don’t think it’s better than having policies that help current and future blacks people get ahead and overcome decades of disadvantages. I’m sure those receiving the 5 million would disagree though😛

It also can't be repealed or amended by referendum for the next 250 years. I guestimated that it would take 100 years of the County of SF's budget to pay it all off for existing people, but then it continues as new people can become eligible. They just have to move there and live for 13 years, then they're rich. Meaning every black person in the country worth less than $20 million will attempt to move there. It is, however, limited to those who have been incarcerated for drug crimes, or those who are descendents of those incarcerated for drug crimes. Since that presumably includes spending 2 hours in jail for getting caught with a joint, it probably includes at least a quarter of black Americans when you consider it can be anyone you are descended from.

This is all over Fucker and National Review. The far left really needs to keep a lid on stuff like this right now.

i'd argue it's twofold

first part, i think some form of monetary compensation is required. what the "ideal" form, i have no idea. $5M/person doesn't sound bad, but the thing that it ignores IMO is that there needs to be investment in communities as well. as much as our history has harmed individuals, the damage goes far beyond that. my personal idea is systemic investment into black communities. something like $100B/year for the next decade, at minimum. provide the resources to build the communities that would have be there today if it were not for systemic racism. everything from housing and community centers to public transit to green spaces and environmental mitigation/reclamation from polluting industries.

second, and just as important (or maybe moreso), is policy change. if we never change the policies that got us where we are today...I'd say chances are we'll end up right back here and it's more a matter of when, not if. so a massive overhaul on voting rights, anti-discrimination laws, etc.

LOL that $5 million sounds OK. If 20,000 African Americans who live in SF qualify for this, it's going to cost $100 billion. Who in the world is going to pay for that? SF County has like $1 billion a year in discretionary money.

Now try projecting this first to a statewide scale, then to a national scale. If all 40 million or so African Americans got that much, it would cost $200 trillion. That is what, 5 years of our entire GDP, or 40 years of our federal budget.

Being a fantasist does not help right now. The right is off in lala land. We need to stay grounded in reality.

Interesting historical record, but it will go nowhere. There's just not that kind of money to go around, and it's unworkable.

Our justice system is built around punishing offenders through imprisonment and restitution to victims through money.

Given that framework, with no one to throw in jail, the only other option is to give the aggrieved money. It's not the best option or really even a good option, but it's the option our form of justice understands.

That said, if this ever even comes within a light-year of passing, I guarantee the money will be far less and the claims process will be so byzantine that the same people decrying the notion today will be decrying the limited number of payouts tomorrow.

Am I correct in assuming you are opposed to any kind on repetitions for black people? SF not withstanding? How about Tulsa OK? Do you know what happened there?

Yes, I am opposed to reparations for black, white, yellow, red or any other color people for just being a specific color or race. Reparations should be specific in who is eligible and what the offense is. For example there are many blacks that are not effected by the injustices spelled out in the recommendations. It should also be within reason as in this case SF cannot pay the projected amounts as they do not have the budget to support it. In this specific case I think it will do more harm than good. (looking at lottery winners and the most common results of instant money awards).

I do agree that the Tulsa Massacre was horrible and reparations were/are proper in my opinion. As a matter of fact I don't think they did enough (from what I have read) for the affected families.

Reparations is a bad idea. Giving people money won't erase the problems of the past. That can only happen when problems like systemic racism and lack of equal opportunity have been resolved.

Yeah, fuck paying for when you harm other people! Why should a drunk driver have to pay reparations for permanently disabling you or to your family after killing you, its all in the past and money isn't going to erase the problems from the past!

I'm sure they won't face any issues with any of that, its definitely not been part of the problem or anything... Like harder admissions, higher housing prices because they're black (but hey they get lower interest rates, which I'm sure black people living in poverty will have no problem affording a down payment...), etc.

I like how you say money won't fix it, but then literally all your "better solutions" are about economically assisting black people. But we can't trust them to use the money I guess? Do you not see your response is kinda exactly the fucking problem? We keep telling black people how best they should spend money, then wonder why they can't afford those things after centuries of malicious actions towards them, but your fix is to force them into the same institutions that have been discriminating against them. Maybe they'd rather spend it investing in their own communities and not have a bunch of rich white assholes telling them how to after, you know that being exactly what the fucking problem is to begin with?

Here's the thing, it won't make them whole because no shit, money doesn't fix genocide and discrimination. That you're viewing it in that mindset is again, highlighting the fucking problem and your inability to understand. The problem is, none of your fixes are anything but throwing money at the problem either, so I don't know why you act like you know better than them how to spend the money. Frankly, considering the harm done to them, I wouldn't care if they spent the money buying hookers and blow, its better than giving that money to rich white assholes that will use it for the same fucking thing.

I guarantee we've gifted more money wasted entirely by rich white people, every, single, fucking year. But we balk about doing the same for black people.

Let me know when you actually want to have a real discussion about what I’ve posted instead of creating a straw man, perhaps when you get off your high horse. Feel free to reread my posts again and see if you can spot where you went wrong.

Where are the reparations for the Native Americans who were slaughtered enmasse so the whites could have their land? How about reparations for the Asian peoples who were treated like shit by the whites...yet they did the nasty, hard, dangerous work building the railways across this nation?

So...can I self-proclaim myself to be a 15-20 year resident of San Francisco who is black and a victim of decades of racial abuse, discrimination, and intolerance?

I am 100% AGAINST any form of reparations. It won't solve any of the ills in the country, in fact, it MIGHT make things worse as people discriminate (or worse) against those who get the free gubmint money.

Democrats don't fix the problem, they just write you a check.

President Donald Trump’s name will be printed on the stimulus checks that the IRS will be sending to tens of millions of Americans around the country, an unprecedented move finalized this week.
