What are the uses of a computer?

Hey. I know the question is a little rhetorical, but as I sit here by my computer, the only thing that I can think of that I do is play games, use it for school, listen to MP3s, and watch movies. I know you can also set up a FTP server, web server, but what else is there to do? I mean I put all my money into my system, and only find that I can do a couple of things with it. What other suggestions might you have?

The most hours I put in into my computers is to surf FORUMS.ANANDTECH.COM

🙂

there's an idea 😱

My school uses it to check to see which students enter school everyday. Accounting purposes also come to mind.

I use my computer mainly for its internet connection. It has taken the place of tv in addition to the uses you mentioned.

I use mine for java development, school work (papers and such), light gaming, mp3s, major surfing of off-topic.net, working on my personal webpage (amdpwred.com), IM chatting, email, finance (paying bills, checking the balances in my accounts), burning "Items", and learning something new everyday. I guess you could say I spend alot of time on the PC. 😉

Yeah, I would definately say Internet is the way computers are used mainly today. But think about all the other stuff they do -- like weather reports, number crunching (seti@home, finding the ten trillionth digit of pi, whatever), 3D modeling (CAD), art, Graphic design, etc. etc.

I spend a lot of time making "backups" of audio CD's and compilations for in my cars and for friends.

I spend a lot of time doing research and looking things up in a general sense, things i used to go to the library or read magazines for. I spend much time doing digital dark room work.

The computer has integrated into many of my other hobbies, either directly (like photo editing) or indirectly, researching and buying/selling goods and sharing information on usenet.

It has also become a hobby on it's own... i do a lot of hardware and software experiments and projects simply for the sake of learning and understanding how it all works.

-gaming
-watching divx/dvd movies
-mp3's
-using a DVB card to watch satellite TV
-surfing the web

Things I've used computers for:

Statistical Analysis
Database applications
Accounting
Programming C++

I am an oddity I suspect. I never saw a computer game I wanted to play, I listen to music on a super HiFi system so that anything the computer can do sounds poor in comparison and sex iis not a spectator sport so porn is of no interest. My computers are essential to my life though. I use them in my mathematical research, I write all of my papers on them and handle all of my correspondence with them. The internet is a valuable resource -- although no where near a replacement for a good reference library yet. Preliminary searching on net can and does save hours in the stacks -- and maybe some of you will live long enough to see the material now in the stacks of libraries on net. I won't. e-mail and IM have replaced phone calls for a lot of communications and have the advantage that you can have a record if you wish.

So, mathemaical research, publication, on-net research and communication

In no particular order:

audio recording editing and archiving
graphics editing and archiving
financial analysis
telecommunication
database programming
