What are the USB ports on a PS2 for?

head set, ubs drive, mouse, kb, ie. Anything you can plug into your computer, you can plug into the PS2.

No, I meant what I asked. I guess if PC keyboards work on PS2 though, the Sony branded ones are just regular USB keyboards. I want a laptop style keyboard for my PC and am eying this one. http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/produ...details/US/EN,CRID=2282,CONTENTID=6636

HDD?! SWEET! So how do I play the games I've ripped to HDD for backup? I've got an external drive with a backup of my games. Do I need to have them in a certain folder or something on the root? 😕

Heh, my friend uses the USB ports on his PS2 to charge his and his brother's iPods, I use the one on my cable box for the same 😛

what? backed up ps2 games to a usb HDD that you had connected to a computer? hmm no it will not work, you would need certain software to backup games with and play them, and thats with the internal hdd for the ps2. I am not sure what can be done with an external drive.

Yeah, you can rip the discs to your computer but I don't have a DVD burner so I can't actually BURN the backups to disc to play them. I've been sitting for a few months with backups on an external USB drive but no way to burn and play them. I know there's specific software needed to burn them because there are bad sectors on the PS2 discs intentionally. Windows will try correcting the data to remove the bad sectors when you read the discs in the computer, which is why you can't just rip and burn to new DVD to play the game. The data will still be on the burned DVD, but the PS2 is programmed to ignore the discs because the bad sectors are missing.

Anyway, I've got the slim PS2 so there's no room for an internal drive like there is on the old, clunky ones. 🙁

Uh, don't know what you're talking about there Nik. When I had my PS2 with.......I believe, a DMS3, all it took was popping the disc in, making an image with Nero, and burning it to a DVD-R.

what's DMS3 😕

Edit:
Apparently DMS3 is a mod chip. Yeah, those aren't legal in the US last time I checked.

Anyway... anyone got a suggestion on how to get the PS2 to recognize games on an external USB HDD?

Popular PS2 modchip, lets not get into a gray zone here.

you won't be able to play backups without some kinda of special hack
slidecard/swapdisc, modchip, etc etc
and im not talking about dvd burning software, im talking about software that is used on the ps2 to backup discs through the ps2 itself onto a hard drive

Oh I need to be doing the backups to HDD THROUGH the PS2? Okay that would make sense, I guess. What software?

hdadvance, and you'd need an internal drive, usb 1.1 is too slow for playing games.

ok... another question then... is there a way to transfer files to a memory card? i was looking for madness 2006 on ebay and noticed people selling memory cards with rosters on it (as in actual names instead of numbers - btw, is there a reason they only ever have numbers? it's not that hard to do names. legality?), and i'd like to find those files for some of my various other college sports games.

Is there an IDE connector inside the slimline ones? I'd consider voiding the warranty to pop it open and connect the drive.

there is, but it requires some soldering skills.

there are 2 kits for doing this, hd connect and hdcombo, costs about $50 plus install.

maybe worthwhile to get an old fat ps2 instead or a burner.
