Can't believe no one said Warcraft 2?

I remember when setting up the sound card to work in DOS (when you had to do that, ya know):

"Your sound card is working perfectly"
"Your sound card is working perfectly"
"Your sound card is working perfectly."
"It's not going to get any better than this."

The original Quake was also DOS based until winquake.exe was released.

Mine have been mentioned:

Master of Orion I and II (too bad they never made a third. That's right, I said they NEVER made a third)

Wing Commander III - with the gameplay and video scenes, this game was WAY ahead of its time.

TTD, Total Annihilation, Civ, Duke 3D, Quake, Doom, Diablo were all among my favorites...

I was able to find out where and what you had to do to get the free games. Like Lord of the realms 2

Step 1. Create a fake email address (you have to provide it. if you dont want spam then just make a fake free one on hotmail) You will need to confirm some stuff in your email
Step 2. You will need to input your address and phone number. These arnt checked so if you want place fake information here also.
Step 3. Go to http://www.cdosabandonware.com/
Step 4. Make an account with your information of the fake. Just remember you will have to activate it in an email so you can have a fake just remember how to get into it.
Step 5. Click on games at the top
Step 6. Choose which games you want
Step 7. On the right side below all the pics and link there will be a download button push it and it will take you to a download spot. To be able to download though you must complete some surveys. At the end of the surveys they will give you an answer to a question that was shown after you went to the download screen. It takes about 10 to 15 mins depending on typing speed. Click on the link in the middle to continue.
Step 8. Select which free offer you want. (I had to do this twice the first time I did the donkin donuts one and it didnt provide me with the correct key code.
Step 9. Enter either your information or enter the fake information.
Step 10. Now there will be a bunch of surveys at the top. It will say you have to do them. If you scroll down there will be a skip button. Just keep hitting that over and over again. If another screen pops up on a different tab go back to the original and see if you missed the skip button.
Step 11. At some point there will be a page that comes up and states you have to select 2 offers. Just right click on two and open in new tab. then at the bottom hit continue. You may have to do this twice. Then there will be one that says 4 different selections. Do the same thing open 4 in different tabs then hit continue.
Step 12. At this point you should be at the end. Look around carefully because it is easy to miss the spot where the answer to the question is. There may be a couple more screen where you have to hit skip or continue. Always go with skip unless continue is the only option.

And thats it take the answer to the question and place it into the original Download spot. After you successfully do this you will be able to download 3 different games. Choose carefully because you wont be able to do another survey till next month.

I still need to check to see how to install I will get back to you on how to.

Wow, that looks shady...and tedious. Just sayin'

GoG.com sells legal DOS classics at reasonable prices and actually pays the publishers.

Why oh why did the wife sell it! I might have to take a look on GoG.

Any other sites do similar service?

you will need winrar to extract the download. Select the one file and hit extract. Exit out of win.rar then open a new win.rar promt and go to where you extracted the game. There will be about 40 rar files. extract again.

Then go one more file deaper. Select all the Lord2 files and hit extract. You dont want the nfo or the one that says razor or rar. After you do this it should start extracting the actual game.

I had to get dosbox because I have a 64bit operating system. Now I dont know for sure but if you have a 32bit you may beable to work it without dosbox. I am not sure.

If you have to have dosbox it is really easy to setup. You install the software and then mount a folder. you then place all the games into that folder. I labeld mine old folder, inside it I kept the other folder names small to help with command in dos. I placed the install files into a folder named L. I then brang up dosbox again I went to where I extracted the game (B:\old\L)

in dosbox .73 I would type. cd\old Then cd\l Then to start the game l2d.

I know all this can be a big pain but if your like me it will be worth the enjoyment you get out of the old style games.

Whats really nice is after you successfully do the survey stuff you can choose up to 3 old styple games to play.

One stuck out at me. I played it on nintendo never on the pc. It was contra.

Ok this is it. I hope this helps someone out lol.

I'm not sure. It wasnt really shady. alot of companies have surveys out there. They pay thousands of dollars to hear what we have to say. This is just a different way to get the information and it cost them very little.

And like I said make up a fake email and address so that way you wont have to worrie about recieving spam or junk mail lol. The last time I did this I had to do the same thing. It is a real pain in the arse.

The nice thing about dosbox is that you dont have to do anything lol. If you have an old game from windows 95 just download dosbox set it up and your done. You install the game like how you would have way back when and then you start it the same way. Oh one big thing you will have to hit (alt+enter) to make it full screen. And if you are using dosbox you will need to mount the dvdrom drive everytime. but the drive where you installed the games is already there.

Type intro - This will provide you with 4 different screen to show different commands.
Type intro cdrom - this will provide you with the information on how to mount your cd.

Oh to install the game its kinda wierd. If you have multi drives then you will have to do it in this order.

I installed Dosbox on B:
I placed the mounted drive onto B: old (it treats the mounted drive as C: )
When it comes time for me to install the game I use the default. It will be C: Hospital (for theme hospital). Keep it the default because it will treat the B: old folder as the C: . It will install all the games there. It will not actually go under your C:. Then bam go to your mounted drive and it will be there. now all you have to do is run the game.
For me I type B: cd\old\l then hit enter. l2d to start the game. And thats it

(i have 4 harddisk drives)
A: if for gaming raid (2 veloraptor raid setup)
B: is a typical sata drive I place windows utilitys and backup here
C: is a ssd I place my operating system here.

I hope all this information is helping someone out lol my fingers are starting to cramp up lol.

If you want I am more then will to take some pictures of the game playing also. In dos box. Not to sure if this will help relieve some of your concerns but I am willing to do it. Plus I like taking pictures lol :)

EDIT: all the B : \ that I placed where coming up with smiles so I rewrote them as B: (I placed a space after each one. the space = \)

You probably didn't read every post on page 1. I remember trying the original DOS WarCraft demo and I thought RTS was cool. Then read about WC2 and got really excited. When it was finally released I was awed by the breath-taking cut scenes, ground-breaking detailed SVGA graphics (when most pc games were still VGA and console games were seriously low res), and addicting game play.

There are "abandonware" sites out there that are not nearly as sketchy as that. There is no reason to go through all that.

abandonia is a good one, and I think Home of the Underdogs is back up after being up and down and moving domains a bunch over the past few years.

Note that "abandonware" is still illegal, of course. GOG is pretty awesome (and legal) and I hope they keep expanding.

C:\war2

war2.exe

I remember typing that well... Was definitely a dos game; upgraded to 12 megs of ram for that game since 8 wasn't quite cutting it.. The system had windows 3.1/dos 6, and I know it didn't run right in 3.1. I imagine the b.net edition was windows, but I never played it.

C&C: Tiberian Dawn
- Most fun RTS I have ever played. More ways to win than any other RTS that I have played as well. The sequels really nerfed a lot of the strategies so that you only had a few left.

Under a Killing Moon
- Cool adventure game that had good production value. Tex Murphy is hilarious.

Honourable Mentions: Wolf3D, Doom 2, Syndicate, Wing Commander series, Shadow Warrior, Space Quest series, & C&C Red Alert
