What are the pros and cons of an LCD monitor?

I have some gift certificates to CompUSA and I don't know what to buy since I don't really need anything. I do have a dual display video card but only one monitor as of right now. So I was kinda thinking about getting an LCD monitor as my second display. I was just wondering what the advantages and disadvantages to them are?

I know for gaming they suck(ie UT/Q3A)! However for surfing/office documents they are great, we use them at work(Samsung 570b and philips flat panels) and they are real easy on your eyes! They also take up a hell of alot less space than crt monitors and lcd's weigh next to nothing!
If its for a backup monitor Id say go for it

I would just like to say I have a KDS Rad-5 LCD and it is just fine in FPS games. I play them VERY often.

"It quite happily accepts a range of resolutions from 640x350 up, and a range of refresh rates up to 75Hz in all resolutions. 75Hz is enough for anyone, but when it comes to actually drawing the image on the screen, the input refresh rate becomes irrelevant next to the physical time it takes for each pixel to refresh. In fact, I'd say the pixel refresh rate was quite low indeed on this unit, running a Q3 timedemo or even just playing a fast-paced game leaves a faint ghostly trail behind any moving object - in the case of a first-person shooter, the whole screen is often moving so it becomes quite hard to see small objects accurately. If you're a hardcore railgun freak in Q3, your accuracy will go out the window. This was perhaps the most dissapointing aspect for me, and the reason this unit was moved off the games box."

Ripped from a review on oveclockers australia, ive heard of alot of issues with fps gaming on lcd monitors and this site wasnt the only one complaining of this issue!
If it works ok for you thats great! He may want to see if he can return it if the particular model he picks up sucks at fps gaming if thats his thing!

If you want to use it for gaming, be sure to get a DVI interface insted of a regular analog one, it costs more and you need a probably need a new v/c but it lokks so much better. I have one with an ATI AIW Radeon and love it, UT looks GREAT

LCD have crisper text, less strain on your eyes because it emits no radiation, takes a little space, no convergence problem.

I think you should try it out, if you don't like it. You can always return them.

That's what I'm going to do at first about my LCD, I was going to try it out and return it, but I'm hooked now. Previously I use 2020u and F520 and My LCD beat them by a mile in clarity of the text.

For games a good LCD is SGI 1600SW it has 20ms pixel response times.

Playing fps on lcds are becoming less and less of an issue as response times of the lcds are becoming faster and faster.

I have a planar and so far every game I've played on it looked great. And one more thing, although it already looked great through the analog connector, it looks even better in DVI mode.

So the basic concesus is that they are good except maybe for games, but thats not for sure. What would be a good model that i could get from Comp USA at a decent price.

There is a new 15in LCD from Viewsonic coming out this month called the VX500. It uses MVA (can't remember what that stands for) and has a pixel response of 25ms. Go to the Viewsonic website and check out the LCD monitors. It should be pretty good for gaming and DVD movies with that fast pixel response. Of course, these are only manufacturer ratings so subjective tests may prove otherwise. This is probably the LCD that I'll be getting for college unless something better comes along soon. I just wish it came in a 17in size.:(

m2super, have you ever actually used an LCD? If not, you really shouldn't be giving out an opinion.

They're fine for just about everything, including games. What would you consider a decent price? LCDs can be $300 or $3000 :) And does your video card have a DVI port, or just VGA?

I have an ATI Radeon VE, which I am pretty sure has the DVI connector. I was looking for something under 300.00 after the gift certificates, so i was looking for a total price of 400.00 maybe a little more.

It is a DVi interface, and razor sharp, it worksd with my PC just fine, only think is you can not use the software that it comes with. Ari
