What are the profession(s) that offer no real benefit to society?

I think there are some professions that don't provide any real, significant benefit to society. For example professional sports. They promote physical fitness and healthy lifestyles which is good but what do they give back to society that could be considered really beneficial? Sure, professional athletes could be philanthropic and donate regularly but the money they give out is actually the public's channeled through.

Showbiz ... fashion/movies/music ... what do they offer other than entertainment which I'm sure people can live without (or live with much less than what is available today) other than documentary making which is educational and instructive.

Any others?

Americans spend $150,000,000,000 a year on entertainment. Americans like most people like to be entertained.

So inspiring people to live a healthy lifestyle isn't a real benefit to society? I'm sure that many people would say that computers/computer workers have no benefit to society, since society was able to progress for thousands of years without computers. In fact, some say technology makes the world worse.

How come entertaining people and making them feel good is considered a worthless job, but being able to kill people real quick is considered productive?

I beg to differ. My parents take in foster children, and the social workers play an important role in the children's lives.

I'm not saying we should, I'm just saying that before you think we NEED computers, at least compare the standard of living to a time when there weren't computers in every home.
