What are the practical implications of this law?

So from what I understand
- The government will now screen all newborns for a particular set of hereditary congenital, genetic, and metabolic disorders.
- The info gathered will be used for research and education purposes
- Grant money goes to support the research
- The info gathered will be stored in a single system and be available on the net, updated quarterly

How much personal info are they talking about storing, and is there an opt-out available?

Not trying to be a conspiracy theorist here, just heard about this for the first time and am trying to understand it a bit better. That's why I linked from a non-partisan site.

So how old are you?
Did you read the entire bill?
Were yuo aware that a certain amount of screening takes place already?
Were you aware that the when a Dr asks for your medical history he is in essence screening you?

I see nothing to worry about. You yourself said-- The government will now screen all newborns for a particular set of hereditary congenital, genetic, and metabolic disorders.

Me thinks you are blowing this out of perportion!
You use the word - Governement in place of Health Resources and Services Administration ..

In fact it really does look like you are fishing for some conspiracy that does not exist!

Careful, I heard they might steal your credit card number during these screenings.

I don't see a conspiracy here but the security of this data and controlling access to it is certainly a valid concern. Our government has proven time and again that it is completely incapable of securing data, especially personal information like this.

How did I blow it out of proportion if you think my summary, essentially the entirety of my OP, is accurate?

My link wasn't from a nutjob site. I didn't say anything in my original post other than summarize it. What did I post that looked like conspiracy or panic? I asked a couple of questions and didn't do any fear mongering by posting fargone conclusions about how this would be misused or abused.

I'm 25 and I have a hereditary medical condition.
When I was born they didn't screen (and probably wouldn't screen under this law) for my condition.
When a doctor asks for your medical history it isn't going into a shared-access database.
My only fear would be having this data used at some point for pre-existing condition determinations in insurance.

So do you have answers to my (two) questions or are you just going to come in here and make an unsubstantiated claim that I'm fishing for a conspiracy? God forbid anyone try to understand our laws a little bit better.

Actually I am not going to answer your 2 questions. I believe you never read the bill. Had you then you would have known there is nothing to worry about...unless your reading comprehension is in the crapper.....

Secondly.....if it sounds like...if it looks like..then it probaly is applies to you!~!
There is no conspiracy so go climb back under your rock!!

Peace!!

I never claimed there was a conspiracy, so if there's a reading comprehension issue exists it's yours, not mine. I've never read about a conspiracy attached to this law, I've never listened to anyone assert there is a conspiracy attached to this law, and I don't think there's a conspiracy attached to this law. Nothing in my OP even hinted otherwise. If you think that simply discussing this and asking questions means I'm a conspiracy theorist out looking for trouble then you are crazy and your accusations have taken the thread way off track.

Well, it looks like they haven't necessarily decided what "disorders" they would screen for, section 4 of that bill sets up that job to be done in the next 4 1/2 years.

Additionally, it looks like the information for this specific bill is solely about the presence of these genetic or heritable disorders, and not anything that could be used for an insurer's purpose in order to claim pre-existing conditions. I think it is more for allowing treatments/support/counseling to be disseminated to those who may need it.

Not sure on your second question about an opt-out though, it appears that hasn't been discussed yet.

Just my thoughts.

Thank you; I appreciate hearing somebody else's reading of the language.
