What are the penalties for murder and attempted murder?

it doesn't matter what state, i just need both penalities to be within the same state. i'm writing a paper and need to see how the two penalities differ in severity

depends on the state the degree and several other factors, such as death penalty...
for instance murder1 in washington is a death penalty offense, but a confession and guilty plea will comute this to life with no parole...

1st degree is premeditated (planed out). 2nd degree is not premeditated.
