What are the odds that the warranty will cover this. - Happy ending... I'm covered.

I got new tires on my van a few weeks ago. Today my wife takes it out, makes a turn (a U-Turn actually), brushes the curb and the sidewall of the tire blows out. She (claims) that she didn't hit the curb that hard. The sidewall is literally ripped for about 4-5 inches from the tread inward toward the rim.

My first reaction is "great, there's $120 down the drain," but the more I think about it with as many times as I've hit/brushed curbs in my lifetime, I've never seen anything like this. I'm thinking there may have been some defect on that tire, but I'm not the one that gets make that call in the end I guess.

Update: Turns out I did get road hazard coverage. Free tire + cost of installation. Now if only I could get a happy ending from my wife.

Depends on the tires. I have E rated tires on my jeep that eats curbs for breakfast. (Yum). I brushed a curb at 40mph avoiding a woman who cut in front of me, with no issues... My guess is they're gonna say you're SOL, but if they don't, be glad.

this exact thing happened to me in raleigh at the ATOT meet, i just got a new tire, didn't think it would be covered

Road hazard will usually cover it, but that is not covered by any road tire warranty I know of.

women

brush=ran the over curb at 60 mph.

In fact if you go for warranty leave the wives name out of it, thats automatically going to raise a red flag.

Find out if the tires came with a road hazard warranty with them when you bought them.

The last tires I bought did have this.

Nah, my wife drives like a man. She probably hit the curb at about 100mph. 🙂

You probably don't have road hazard coverage. Most geeks around here don't pay extra for that stuff. 😉

very little chance, unless you got road hazard protection

'zackly...ONLY road hazard warranty is gonna cover sidewall damage.

She DID hit a curb...sidewalls are not made to withstand that.
(but they should be able to stand some impact)

If you bought them at Costco they will do it for free. I had this happen to me but I was just regular parking and the curbed was chipped off or something and blew my tire.

Geeks around here buy their tires at Costco, which has road hazard coverage by default. 😛

Well I didn't get it at Costco, in retrospect I probably should have - I would have gotten a better tire at around the same price.

But... it turns out that I did get road hazard coverage, so I'm getting a free tire, minus the cost of installation ($22).
