Nursing is a good idea, health care in general there's always going to be a big need for it because people don't stop aging.

I love my SQA job.

I get to break sh1t all day and dont have to fix it.

Nothing like ruining a programmers day w/ bugs.

just remember that with nursing you have to be availible to work 7 days/week 24 hours/day 356 days a year including all holidays.

I'm a software developer and I'm doing ok, but I am worried that even when the economy recovers, the outsourcing is going to kill the US market for my skills.

So create your own market. If your knowledge portfolio remains stagnant you are at risk of being commoditized, and that means someone in India (or wherever) could fill your position. Diversify your knowledge portfolio, find a niche, and exploit it. I know far too many disgruntled software developers who are unemployed because they felt they could sit in a cube all day writing maybe 10 lines of code a day. They couldn't find a job because they spent 3 years riding the wave of corporate waste, so they didn't advance themselves; result, they're obsolete.

Not saying that you are, I'm just saying such is the case for a lot of IT people who are upset with the recent increase in outsourcing. If your market dries up, create a new one. This applies to any industry...
