What are the most useful languages to know for someone who wants to travel all over the world (other than english)?

Spanish?
French?
German?

Do you guys know of any websites that list the major languages by their region on earth?

And, of course, Klingon.

I wouldn't go with Hindi, to be honest with you. Quite a few Indians speak English, so I'd focus on another language :)

French, English, Spanish, Newspeak.

I know the above, working on Norsk(Norwegian), hoping to learn Dutch and God knows what else.

English and Mandarin probably.

Most of Europe knows english fairly well, so it's not necessary to learn european languages.

Definitely English.

Also depends to what countries you are travelling. And it's not like you are going to learn these language before you go travelling, because it takes time to learn a language.

What languages do you know right now? And what are you planning to travelling to?

I only speak english at the moment. (well, a small bit of Spanish, French and Greek as well)

I really want to learn Spanish becasue I'd like to go to Mexico and all around South America. I know they speak a lot of Portuguese as well, so I might like to learn that as well.

I'd love to learn multiple languages so I can get by in a bunch of places though.

I figured if I could at least learn Spanish and French there are a lot of places I'd be alright for.

I wouldn't mind learning German and Mandarin as well.

English (pretty much everwhere)
Mandrin (all over Asia, plus huge chinese tourist boom in Europe these days)
German (Germany and Eastern Europe, and German tourists are everywhere)
French (Europe, Asia, Africa)
Spanish (Europe, Americas)

Depends on how you define 'useful' I suppose. If you're going to take a lot of tests, then it would be most useful to know languages in the same family as English and tracing back to their roots so you could work out origins and stuff to help you. In that case German, Greek, and Latin would be most useful. French, Spanish, and Italian less so, but might help a bit.

If you are planning on using these other languages in travel it depends on where you'll travel. Work, same thing.

On the other hand, if you're planning on space travel you might want to pick up Klingon, Ancient, or Goa'uld. ;)

I know Japanese and unless you're in a job that requires you to know Japanese, or are living in Japan, its not very useful. But it is fun to know.
