If you would have asked me first, I would have told you not to do that.

If it aint' broke, don't fix it. G80 tech is still pretty current, surprisingly. GPUs like that only come along every so often. R300 is the only other example I can think of aside from perhaps the original GeForce. Everything else had viable competition in the marketplace. The cards I mentioned were at least twice as fast as the next fastest card available. It's simply incredible.

well i dont see how you are playing many current games at 1080 with a 8800gts 320mb. the memory alone would force you to turn down settings. IMO a gtx260 is really the minimum card for 1920x1080 if you care about high settings and using AA. the only game I cant handle is Clear Sky DX10 max settings. that game is too poky in the outside environments. Crysis is playable on max settings with no AA and a custom config.
Perhaps if you had an 8800GTS 320mb you would understand.

The reviews over-glorified the memory limitations of the card. I find it hard to notice AA on my HDTV even if I do have to turn it off. The card is also an excellent overclocker, especially if you tweak the fan speed in the BIOS.

It really does depend on the game. If you want absolutely *everything* to run nice at 1080P w/ AA, then yes, you need a GTX260 at the very least. But really, why would you reward bad programming by purchasing expensive hardware? Just don't buy the game. It will teach developers to code their games properly and hire people who know what they're doing.

well I just buy and play the games I want and try not to worry about too much. I have learned to wait until a game drops in price and gets patched instead of forking out 50 bucks plus tax to play test.

I try to always purchase hardware that is the best bang for buck. my gtx260 only cost me $170 after rebate and that was back in November. the gtx280 would have been nice but not for twice the price. now if I sale that card for even $100 then I have got my moneys worth out of it.

there are several good deals out there right now but they would not be much of an improvement for me. if I had an 8800gts 320mb then I would certainly get a new card though. although if the rest of your system is as old or older than that 8800gts 320mb then a very high card may go partially to waste anyway for you.

Strange. I upgraded a long time ago from 8800GT to a 4870 512mb and I say that I've seen enough of an extra performance to say that it worth it. I agree that some games run the same, but what are you referring when you say "regret and sheer frustration"? I mean what frustration can a fast GPU, accompanied by 1 GB of Vram, raise?

Well, in a few of my older and favourite games, performance is really horrid, where the fps will drop under 20fps during action scenes while they ran absolutely perfect on my 8800gts. Lowering the graphics settings doesn't even help. The thing that really got me pissed the hell off was when I contacted ati support about it, and it was just a joke. And then everything else just compounded my frustration, and now I'm complaining about it.

Which are those games?

I'm still holding out, I've been wanting to get a GTX 295 but I'll wait until this fall and see what the next generation brings. I just completed a new i7 build and the only thing holding it back is my video card for now.;)

I am another hold out. There is nothing I can not play on high to very high settings. I might get one on the next generation, there is just not enough performance gain to justify the price. Its not like when I went from my 7900GS up the the 8800GT, that was mind blowing, everything else out now is eehhh. I will wait.

I would say my upgrade from 8800GT to 4870 1 gig was a big improvement, but I went from a 1440 x 900 monitor to a 1080p model at the same time. I prefer to have everything cranked up visually if I can, the 8800GT won't do that without dipping too low in the fps department in certain games.
I am really suprised in my old 8800GTS I still run, it does well, but for some reason Quake 4 plays horribly on it, maybe a known issue idk. The rest of my games seem fine.

Just upgraded a friend's computer for him. Went from a 8800GT to a Quad SLI GTX295 (he also upgraded to an i7).

I probably don't belong in your poll, but here it is. I have an 8800 GTX (Jan 07) that I'm still using. I tried a factory OC'd GTX 260 (192) and was pretty disappointed in the performance difference on a 22 inch monitor. Sold it, bought an Arctic Cooling Accelero for my 8800 GTX and OC'd it. I'm fine for another generation.

I think I just got in the habit of upgrading every year or 18 months and thought I would see the performance improvement I had noticed doing so over the years (hardware vs. evolving game graphics). Things kind of slowed down recently in that regard.

Agree. The 8800GT was probably was of the best bang for your buck cards ever released. And yeah it still plays most games at very nice levels of eye candy, at any resolution up to say 1680x1050. I've got a 9800 GT in my Dad's system which is really only a renamed 8800 GT and it runs every game just fine...

I swapped my pair of 8800GTs for a pair of GTX 260s, end cost was about $150 each with MIRs and that 25% off ebay deal from MS.

8800 GTS, upgraded to 4870. Regret my decision not due to the video card being bad or being a bad upgrade. I just don't have the time to play games for more than a couple hours a week lately. I gave the card to my younger bro so it's all good.

There always some games which are too old to take advantage of the new power offered by the newer cards because they're too CPU bound or ROP bound or whatever it is. There are games that even run slighly faster on the 9800GTX+ than on the GTX 260, but more advanced games with lots of shaders, eye candy and anti aliasing, the GTX260 can be two times faster than the 9800GTX+, the same happens with the HD 3870 that in Unreal 3, the HD 4870 can be a hair faster, but the game is running at high FPS anyways, but in games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Fallout 3 the HD 4870 can be 2.5 times faster than the HD 3870, a performance leap not seen every day since the X800XT or 8800GTX launch.

Welllllllll F......

I was going to stay the course with my 8800GT for a few more months, but then I noticed this MSI card posted in our "Hot Deals" forum... and bit. lol

Here's the thread.

Final price before rebates and all that cash back silliness was $215 to Seattle WA, no tax or shipping. Not bad I say.

I have a 24" widescreen, and would love to game at the native resolution (Finally), so that strongly influenced my purchase just now. If I had a smaller screen, I would have held onto the 8800GT until Q4 of this year probably.

So put me down as an 8800GT owner that went to the 4890, lol. And after everything I said. :p Oh well, it'll be nice to game at 1920x1080 finally, :)

I've been keeping an eye out for a new card since about Jan/Feb of this year, and the only card that's really gotten me to raise an eyebrow was the 4870 1GB version.... and it looks like many of you guys as well.

Astrallite is right about the 8800GT being a fabulous upgrade back in '07... guess I'm sort of spoiled and looking for a similar kind of upgrade now, :p

I think I'll hold onto the 8800GT a few more months and see what else is announced, and if nothing else catches my eye, at the very least prices should drop a little. Thanks for all the replies again, very interesting to hear everyone's thoughts.

That's a smart move. sometime before xmas the dx11 cards will be out from both camps. 5870/gtx300 series should be interesting.

Maybe he meant that it was a gift. No need to start accusing people. :p
