What are the Lockheed F-16's foreign counterparts and how do they stack up?

I'm guessing that the Mig-29, Rafael, and Eurofighter are direct competitors. Does anyone know of how each of these planes stack up against each other or have any links to back up the evidence?

Heh. In the world of commercial and military aviation, the US is pretty much it with few exceptions like Airbus Industrie and several British companies. But, to answer your question, I've have to say the Eurofighter Typhoon is the closest thing out there.

Of course, I forget all the various MIGs that are out there. The Mig-29 is the $hit as far as I know, but we have the F-22 now.

Edit: Here are some pics.

The Rafael and the Eurofighter are in a completely different league that the F16. It also depends on which model of F16 you are talking. Roughy speaking the Mig-29/Saab Gripen typer aircraft would be rough equivalents to an F-16. Thier is also really no good way to compare and contrast the aircraft.

You also have to factor in training and motivation of pilots and ground crews. These aircraft require huge amounts of maintenance and poor maintenance and poor pilot training is more often than not the deciding factor.

The aircraft itself is not necessarily the determining factor in combat. Pilot training is a huge factor.

Agreed. It takes brains and courage in a dogfight. The armerment and mode are secondary.

I would stack our f-16 pilots up against any mig pilot anytime, anywhere. F-16 rules!

Yes, I'm ex Air Force. Proud to have served when F4 phantoms where fashionable. ;)

Hehe, I'm trying to earn my pilot wings in Falcon 4.0 (just got the game yeterday and installed the 1.08 patch and SP3). That's why I posted this thread.

What was the F4's nickname? I thought it was Fat Bastard or something like that :D

You might be thinking of the B-52 nick, BUF, Big Ugly Fvcker.

I thoght the Phantom had a nickname also, thud comes to mind but I don't think that is right. I'll take a look around if no one beats me to it.

Edit/ It looks as if I was wrong, Thud was the nn of the F-105. The only nickname I have seen for the Phantom was for the Phantom II, "Double Ugly".

Yeah, I was getting ready to say...the Thud was the Thunderchief.

I am going to say the F-4 is among the most remarkable planes ever. I know the newer planes are indeed better, but there was something about the F-4 I cant quite put into words.

How about negatively effecting our kill ratio Vietnam?

The F-16 was originally manufactured by General Dynamics. Now Lockheed (SR71, U2, F-22, F-35) has control.

Ohh, if you want to watch a good movie on the F-16, General Dynamics, and wire chaffing, check out "Afterburn." I think it was an HBO movie and it stars Laura Dern and Robert Loggia.

Mig 29 is the main competition. Kind of hard to say which one is better. Germans might do a good head to head comparison since they inherited both MiG29 and F16 from the Cold War.

A well maintained Mig29 would give a F-16 a fight...but overall no one really is in the same class as the 16 was in its hey-day. Some would argue the French Mirage, but with the updates in communications and radar equipment, gave the falcon the advantage in any dogfight it might encounter.

BTW: The Eurotrash 2000 project IMO is a glorified missile platform. Press it into a dogfight against an FA-18 or a F-22 and you can kiss that P.O.S goodbye.

When it comes to technologically advanced weaponry: USA rules.
Now if we could just fix our economical problems we'd be alright...

Got to do a walk thru of the GD(now Lockheed) F-16 factory in Dallas a few years ago. Very remarkable place. It is odd to see blocks of aluminum on one side of the building and f-16 on the other. Even got to sit in one :).

well, US jets are all about tech....they're weren't made for intense maneuvering and screwed up runways.......

in a raw dog fight, i say mig-29 owns evrything there is in the world....it is hands down the most maneuverable plane there is due to its thrust vectoring stuff and extreme turning cycle.....even though it's a huge plane, it can outmaneuver the f-16....

but of course we got the f-22 now...the mig can't see it b4 it gets shot down....

Huh? I thought that the Su-37 (which is comparable to the F-15) had thrust vectoring, not the MiG-29

I stopped talking about planes when an F4 Phantom pilot put things in perspective for me.

I don't know jack SH*T about planes, even if I read up on all of them. Each and every fighter pilot is different, and a plane is only as good as their pilot. An F-16 pilot will tell you that nothing can touch them in the sky. An F-14D fighter pilot will gloat about the uprated GE turbofans they have, and say nothing can touch them now.

A Su-27 pilot believes that with the AA-11 Archer, nothing can touch them.

I cannot describe how embarassed I was when I started saying which plane was better than which to a military pilot. I think shortly after that, I erased my disk of F-15, F/A-18, Falcon 4.0, and Flanker 2.0. He absolutely crushed me:) I then moved onto cars...something I can actually have experiences with:D

Anyways, the F16 is the benchmark with it's avionics suite, and maneuverability. You've listed all the counterparts, the F16 will hold its own against all of them, assuming they're USAF pilots.

Throw some Navy/Marine F/A-18 pilots into the mix...and things get hairy...these guys are the cockiest MFers around! Not only will they gloat about how they went through REAL boot camp;), they throw how they have to land on a carrier, have to refuel with a basket system...and that USAF boys are wussies.

Gah...I wish I was pilot.

edit: IAF pilots are just as Sierra Hotel as anyone...I think they were judged the best Air Force in the world.

Bonus point for anyone that can tell me how the 105 got the name "Thud"

Useless trivia here, what was the only plane to get a questionable name(ie in poor taste for the time) past the Army Air Corp in WWII?

I think because of how often it crashed, and with how much of a violent manner it did it in.

I'm not sure though. I sure do love the 105 though...I pretty much love all the Century series fighters, especially the F-106 Delta Dart.
