What are the horizontal wavy lines that run down my monitor?

Not really a tech support question.
I just need some monitor expert to answer this.

This is kind of a strange problem.
My Sony G400 has wavy lines running down it, I think the lines are kind of black. These lines are very hard to notice, infact i'll bet most people have never noticed them on their monitors but they are there.
The lines are easier to notice on a white background but you have to look very closely. My sony G400 does it and I have seen other monitors do it to, the Viewsonic A90f, Viewsonic E90f and the Sony Hmd-a440 all do it as well. And probably alot of other monitors.
So just what are these wavy lines?
Is it the screen refreshing?
I know my Monitor is not defective and it isnt interference from speakers.
this is not really a tech support, technical question, I have already ruled out the possibility of it being technical, I have seen 5 different monitors in 5 different locations all do this.
It seems to be a design flaw or something.
I also have a Samsung Syncmaster 900 NF in my house as well and the 900 NF DOES NOT have this problem of wavy lines.
I have already ruled out the possibility of it being, interference from speakers, bad video card, electrical interference, bad cords, bad power in the house, etc. etc. etc.
This problem, whatever it is is in the Monitor.

No, Im not talking about the aperture grille wires.

These are horizontal lines, dozens of them that move up and down the screen, they are very small and
very, very, hard to notice.

No the refresh rate is at 100.
Honestly, im telling you it is not any technical problem with my computer,
or wrong settings or anything.
I have tried EVERYTHING to get rid of this problem and I have seen several
other monitors do this.
Where can I get ahold of a monitor expert?
Sony is no help:)

It really sounds like you have some kind of electromagnetic interference nearby. I have seen simple things like desktop fans cause wavy lines like you described. I'm assuming you've degaused recently?

Yeah I degaussed but it didn't help.
The only fans nearby are in the computer and my computer is about 4 feet away.
There are some speakers and a tv in this room but they are all atleast 7 feet away from the monitor. Is that to close?

That should be plenty of distance...is it possible that your monitor is defective? Or could you set it up somewhere else away from everything and test it?

I think what he is talking about is EMI. If you can use a DVI connection switch to that, otherwise you will have to upgrade to a heavy duty high quality cable.

mx1mx1,

I've got the identical problem with mine (same model, SONY CPD-G400), which I bought about 2 years ago (manufactured Nov2000 in Mexico plant). I first time noticed those lines after about a year of use, and have not find the reason for them (eliminated speakers proximity, cables shielding etc). I see the tiny scrolling lines (exacly what you described in your post, not talking Trinitron dumper wires here).

They don't appear always, only at some 20% of time and that after the PC starts; the only way to get rid of them is reboot, sometimes just power on/off on the monitor (degauss won't help usually).... it's OS independent, got the both under XP/Win2k and Linux as well.

I use PNY GF3Ti200 at 1600*1200*32 and 85Hz (problem persists at 75Hz as well), which is supported resolution & refresh rate.
I think the monitor is somehow defective, since I bought another 19" SONY ( CPD-G410R) a few weeks ago, and have no problem with that one.

cheers
dave

How is that relevant?

Its a problem with ATI cards and trinitron monitors. I have the same problem with my 9500 pro, and it is INCREDIBLY irritating.

I can stand the lines, but I cant stand the slight high pitched squeal that comes along with it.

Are you talking about Moire? If it is Moire then the lines should be easier to see on a gray background. Your monitor should have Moire settings, try adjusting them.

I am seeing similar squiggly/wavy lines going across my LCD and they are easier to see against a white background. It is irritating on my eyes. So far, I have moved my computer to another monitor and found that it is not the computer. My computer is right next to my TV, and I have not had a chance to move the monitor to another place. I am going to try an extension cord from another room, as it could be EMI or maybe just the circuit that runs to that power plug. I never noticed the problem when my computer was in another room. I hooked up my 19" CRT sitting on the floor on my PCI video card and did not notice the problem.

I am wondering if it could even be my uniteruptable power supply. I will also try another monitor cable if I can dig one out.

I hope to report back with positive results.

Ok I have alot of information to add.:)

I am using a Geforce 2 Ti and I have also tried a Geforce 3 Ti 200
and it still does it.
I have tried all resolutions, refreshrates still does it.
I actually just got back from buying a new monitor for my computer in the
other room. I bought a Sony HMD-A440 and hooked it up in the other room to my
other new computer and that one does it too, It's a brand new Sony A440.
I wonder if this is an issue with Sony Trinitrons??

Lorlabnew mentioned that his G400 does it to and I think he is correct when he says it
doesn't do it all the time atleast I cant notice it all the time.
Another affect that these lines have is they make text kinda wave back and forth a little,
Like the text isn't sitting perfectly still. If I look really closely at the text on both monitors
the text moves back and forth just a little kinda like it is breaking apart then coming back together.
Im starting to wonder if it is the houses power that is causing interference at the wall outlets or
something.
I have never heard anyone else mention this problem but it is to noticeable for me to be the only
one to ever notice it:)
So that kindof rules out a design flaw in Sony Trinitrons.
But I do know one thing, I now have 2 Trinitrons in the same house with the same
problem. If it is power interference in my house how can I fix it?

I've got a P1110 on a ATI 9700 and have no problems. the monitor is 2 years old.

alos i run the TV out to my 36" Sony Wega, no problems their either.

I've seen it before on older monitors. maybe RMA?
