abortion was legal through most of the first century of US history. the common law of england was followed, and no indictment would follow an abortion prior to the 'quickening' (when the fetus started kicking).

abortion laws didn't really get off the ground until the AMA started assassinating competing health-care fields in the later 1800s. by 1910 every state in the country had law outlawing non-therapeutic abortion (which remained legal throughout).
