You could look at the HT forums like AVSForum or maybe check some of the review/magazine sites for HT.

Now that Pioneer is out of the game, everyone pretty much just buys Sony (LCD), Panasonic (Plasma), or Samsung (both) anyway. ;)

Why is Pioneer out? I know that stopped making Plasmas...did they ever make LCD? I'm not sure as my interest in LCD isn't very high.

Are they getting out of the monitor market, too...or just TV?

Pricing isn't want makes the TV good or popular. The good/popular TVs generally are flooding the first page of the Plasma and LCD forums on AVS regardless of price.

From what I have gathered, around 1200-1500$ and Plasma, Panasonic 50G10 vs. Samsung 50B650 for example.

If that happens to be your price range and TV size you are looking for, those are the two to further research.

For Plasma, and prices outside this range, baring Pioneer, Panasonic and Samsung both have parallel lineups from 800$-4500$.

I don't know anything about LCDs at the moment that might quicken your search, but I would assume AVSforum LCDForums would get you the 3 major close competitors within about 10 minutes...

They just stopped producing their own panels,

Now I think they buy their panels from the same guys as panasonic and samsung (I think), but they still do their own processing which is half the battle for quality.

Pioneer is out of the display market altogether. Whatever they have out now, is all you'll ever see of Pioneer. Once that stock runs dry, no more Pioneer displays. And they've never used any other manufacturer's glass. If you own a Pioneer plasma, you have have Pioneer glass.
