What are the cpu foam pads for?

The cpu I just received has four foam pads on the top side. Do they serve a purpose? I am looking to put a Tai-Sol CGK760092 hsf on it. Do I need to remove these pads are do they help keep the hsf stable and even? Thanks for you help.
 
They are there to stabilize the heatsink so you'll less likely damage your processor when you mount a heatsink. Since Athlons or Durons have such a small contact area, those foam pads compress and help prevent the heatsink from mounting improperly...
