I saw an intel commercials and I've seen pictures of this thing before, it was a guy in a white suit, like a hazmat suit carrying a large disk out of a machine, what was it? Thanks.

I know it's a "wafer", but can someone explain to me in detail how you can make an FX57 out of something like that?

Just caught this thread and thought it interesting. One question though. Does anyone know why the platters are round instead of square? Would it more efficient (less waste) to make it a sqaure exactly the size of x by x cpu dies?

Because to even the silicon out, it is spun very rapidly on a disc of some sort. It's impossible to make it square, so they'd just have to take the round wafer and make it square, before using it. That would be more cost-efficient, but would also consume more time, providing them with less profits in the long run ;).

silicon is created in ingots, 12 inches diameter and many feet long. they are sliced using saws, most likely using diamond coated blades.
