I loved my Toshiba, but sold it with a system. How is Asus, Acer, and AOpen? I don't want a Kenwood.

just my opinion, but i like my kenwood, its a fast, very quiet drive. but I dont trust it like i do my 40x toshiba scsi, because i've run across a CDR here and there that was dog slow in the 72x for no good reason. factory cds and music cds go fast though...

If you're interested in DAE the Teac 540 has a great reputation. Reportedly difficult to find though.

I've enjoyed both the Asus and AOpen line. Nice and fast. Not very loud, as compared to Afreey and Acer.

Lots of good info here: CD Speed 200. Go to the Top 10 section: they show information for both data transfer and DAE performance.

The best overall IDE drives seem to be Teac, Aopen, and Asus. The Afree drives also tests out well but they have a somewhat questionable reliability history. The Kenwoods are fast but they have poor performance when it comes to reading CDR media - or so I have read.

I just picked up an Asus 50X from Egghead for $39 shipped (sorry - out of stock right now). It is very impressive; quite heavy, nice sturdy tray mechanism, and a nice balancing system. It does spin-up to a very high speed, thus it is not super quiet, but the sound is pleasant to my ears - not a harsh buzz like some drives. Good luck.

DONT get Delta and DONT get creative. They both make POS cd rom drives, all deltas are POS and the 52x creative is a POS. The delta may be fast, but it sounds like a damn jet, the sound overpowered all the 17 case fans i had in my pc before. the creative sucks at reading cd-r's and such, and it has a habit of just dying. get Toshiba, they make the best drives, teac next and plextor if you wanna go scsi.

I used to have Afreey 50X, runs very nicely and fast, CLONECD competible.
It has really high pitch spinning sounds, I didn't appreciate it until I go all SCSI. ;)

Just want to throw this in, Pioneer=Acer. Pioneer no longer market CD-ROMs themselves, like they use to with Hi-Val, but they makek CD-ROMs under Acer's name. Most of the Acer CD-ROM parts are produced by Pioneer

WHERE can you buy the TOSHIBA cd-Roms?
I can't find them in any stores or on-line anywhere? Even Toshiba's Homepage ( a horrifying experience in itself) doesn't seem to list them...

post a link for me?
