What are the best multiplayer console games?

I'm looking for games that 2-4 people can sit on the couch and play in front of the TV. I'm not a big sports game fan. Also, let me know which consoles the games are available for. I'm thiking i might pick up an Xbox or PS2.
 
Get and Xbox, and Mod it with a Chip and 120 Gig+ HD.

I just did this 1 month ago and im in LOVE with it......

To me it seems like Nintendo has some of the best multiplayer games out there...
 
I know you're not a sports game fan but tiger woods golf is pretty fun and 4 people can sit and booze and play...

Super Smash Bros Melee is very addictive

fzero (all players must have logged at least 10 hours into the game..experience wise...in order to have fun)

2 player:
rogue squadron rebel strike (coop and vs modes)
soul caliber 2
 
I'd say the N64 is/was the best multiplayer console.

Mario Party
Super Smash Brothers
Mario Kart
etc.

Gamecube virtually has all the newer versions of those games, but if you want it on the cheap!

General chaos - genesis
mario cart 64 and snes are great, the GC version is pure crap
 
There are a couple nice options for multiplayer coop in the computer RPG genre: Crystal chronicles for the GameCube (assuming you've got access to a gameboy per player), and Champions of Norrath for PS2 (multitap required for 3 or 4 players).

Shooters and racing games get old, IMO.
