What are the best IDE harddrives?
I've heard of an IBM line having some problems...78xp??
This drive must have good performace...

I want to spend around $100
It can't be too loud!
I plan to use this to play games :)
And it doesn't have to be that large.. 15GIG is fine..

<< IBM & Maxtor! :) >>

Second that! Look into the GXP 60s for IBM, the 75 has been abit flaky with some people around here. THe 45gig model tends to die far more quickly than it should, something to do with a Head "parking" problem?

aznmist:

You need to tell us more.

Hard drives can be measured on many attributes and you need to tell us more about your wants.

In random order:
Noise level
Cost
"Whats the biggest hard drive I can get for $85?"
"Cost is no object."
Data capacity
Usage
Server vs workstation
"All I'm ever going to do with my computer is e-mail my grandchildren." vs "I'm big into graphics and photography."
Speed of reading
Consecutive data
Random data
Speed of writing
Consecutive data
Random data
Reliability
IBM 75GXP drives not a good choice right now.
Availability of built in diagnostics.
Immunity to physical shock.
Implications if to be used in RAID
Requires at least two drives
All drives the same size
What is the size of your current drive
What percentage of it is currently in use?
Heat output of drive.

Anyway, you get the drift. What things are important to you, what sorts of usage do you anticipate, what is your current storage and utilization of same.

Talk to us.

There are a lot of factors to consider here. I for one hate the noise levels produced by many hard drives. Because of this, I bought 2x Western Digital 153ba about a year and a half ago. They are whisper quiet and for me that is bliss. As far as performance and reliability go, I have heard Maxtor. Even their 5400's are remarkably fast. (I hear that they have a monoply on algorithm engineers) So, if you want performance and reliability like most people, Maxtor may just be the way to go.

We all agree WD are the dud ones, the infamous 1.2gb, 1.7gb and 2.1gb with the click of death....
The 6.4Gb ones with the motor drive recall....
The current ones the blow up regularly.....

I differ regarding Quantum, the RMA process (here in Australia) is nothing short of absolutely pathetic. Just under 2 months is the average from sending the drive to getting a new drive. Quantum Fireball's are the slowest drives out of the large manufacturers, up to 40% slower than Seagate 5400RPM drives - www.digit-life.com

Now that Maxtor owns Quantum, I'm not sure what is going to happen, dont get me wrong, Quantum aren't THAT unreliable, but there are better, however the RMA service stinks.

IBM offer the most reliable drives (I work for a clone OEM manufacturer) and are rather quiet for the 7200RPM drives.

Seagate offer IMHO the best value between performance (7200RPM are the fastest out of the big guys, followed by IBM), now we are simply using the Barracuda III drives as they are very quiet on spindle noise, and only whisper the seek noise, and are ALMOST as reliable as the IBM's.... Oh, they are the same price as the WD's....

WD used to be the best manufacturer many years ago, we had hardly any trouble with the 40Meg-810 meg WD Caviar drives in the old days with Connor following a close second....

Cheers
