Give me a price range and I can tell you a decent set of earphones.

Also, are you more centric around bass or mids/highs?

For that kind of money, if you don't mind looking like a dork, there are two phones which I personally like alot.

#1 'Eggos' are agreed to be one of the best deals under 100$ *and* can be driven very well from any portable player. Walkman.. minidisc player.. CD player.. they can all drive these earphones up very high.

#2 The Grado SR-80s.. are widely regarded as some of the best (In terms of sound quality) under the 100$ mark. After a period of break in (Maybe let 'em play your favorite music for about 80 hours and they'll sound *much* better) they sound awesome. The sound at first might disapoint you but after break in they are wonderful. The same is true for the Eggos to a lesser extent. Good Bass and trebble.

You can't go wrong with either one.

If you want something less dorky, here's my short list.

#1 Sony MDR-888 LP earbud (sounds great. A little short on the bass though.) Runs 50$
#2 Koss Porta Pros (Will go up to ear splitting levels on a gameboy, slammin bass) 50$
#3 Maybe the Sony EX-71s. They're built for heavy bass and sound decent. Not as musical as the 888's.

I'd reccomend the top two over anything on my shortlist, though.

P.S. All of these earphones require a period of maybe 40-50 hours of use to sound their best. Some of them might sound below par before this period. So wait before you decide what you bought is trash and you're gonna bomb my dorm or something. :D

The reputation of Eggos are falling pretty fast in head-fi, I wouldn't spend that much when people are comparing them with the sony mdr-v6 and Sennheiser HD280. Wearing any Grado outside will just look funny.
Under $100 is the worst range for headphones I think.
You should go with the cheapo yet great sounding Koss Ksc-35 from Koss.com or pay a little more for Etymotic Research ER-6 $126shipped in ebay.

Um, I don't know about you guys, but I use earbuds w/ my mp3 player... That way you don't look like a jackass outside. I use Sennheiser MX500s, only $20.

The driver 'Loosens' out of it's shell after so much working/vibration changing the charachteristics of the sound.

Under 100$ there are alot of options but besides my short list there are a few others

Sennheiser PX*00 series
The Koss KSC*5 series (Excellent phones in my opinion! Cheap too!)
And the Sony EX series.
