IMO, having solid undergraduate courses is much more important then an advanced degree, at least while you are taking undergraduate courses. Some colleges (MIT, Caltech) have very solid programs for both, which is why they are the top. Most colleges, however, only specialize in one. US News (which several people have linked to already) tries to distinguish between these two. They have a list for colleges with out doctoral programs, one on for colleges that do. Mine, RIT, is quite near the top of colleges without doctoral programs. I consider this much more important then being at the top of the other list.

On the other hand, as long as you get educated where you go, you'll prolly not be at any noticeable disadvantge except on paper to someone who went to a big name school.

university of illinois, urbana-champaign is among the best for cs, EE, and compE. also has a good business program if you decide to transfer out of engineering

and I go there, but not for those fields

I'm going to toss in a bump for my alma mater, Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). In the survey linked above, it scored in at 50 this past year, but seeing Yale and Dartmouth were at 47, gotta take that with a grain of salt.

WPI does several thing very different than other, traditional schools. First and foremost, it runs on a quarter system. You would typically take 3 courses for 7 weeks, rather than 5-6 courses in a typical 14-week semester. BUT, you'll be going to class 4-5 days a week...so the class-hours evens out. This intensive program is great IMHO for two reason: if you like the class, you can really get immersed in it, and really LEARN...and if you don't like it, well it's only 7 weeks long. :)

The other unique aspect about WPI are several requirements for graduation. One is called the Interactive Qualifying Project, or IQP. It is intended to bind your humanities courses with your major. Also, there are a number of project centers around the country and oversees (I did mine in Puerto Rico working for PREPA (the PR power authority)). Then in your senior year, you do your Major Qualifying Project, which is typically sponsored by a larger business in the Boston area (mine was sponsored by Mass General). It's a year long project that is usually publishable at the end. Nice little perk to graduate with on your CV.

Anyway....find a good school, doesn't have to be a great school, but DO GREAT WHILE THERE. A v. high GPA from a good school is better than a mediocre GPA from a great school when talking to hiring managers (being one myself for a group of 30).

Hope that all helps.

TJ out.

(P.S. And if an MBA is in your future, another school in MA, Babson, is increadible for part-time...actually ranked #1 several years running for Entrepreneurship. Know Home Depot? Founder is a Babson grad. :) )

I was thinking about going to RIT, but I decided not too because the college is located in an area with nothing to do. I was going to go to WPI, but they do not even have an english department, but that said, WPI is still a dam good school. My final choices were all boston schools. Boston University (for Areospace engineering, it's the school to go to), Wentworth Institute of Technology, and Northeastern University. I decided not to go to Boston University because it's one big school, bigger than Northeastern. I decided not to go to wentworth because, even though they do have COOP, it only has classes in engineering technology. Northeastern is what I picked and I can't wait to start. It has a really known coop program in the northeast area and classes are around 27 people, which is a nice size.

You many not know this, but Columbia University has a pretty decent engineering program. I always thought that it was crap, until I visited. The class sizes are very very small, so you get the personal attention that you may or may not want. Plus, in New York City, there are plenty of internships waiting for you. Not only that, you'll get that liberal arts education of an Ivy League school, so you'll be able to write, as well do engineering, as proficiently as any college grad.

Let me get this straight...you eliminated WPI because it didn't have an English department?

C'mon now...you're going to be an engineer, not a literary master! I have a B.S. in Biotechnology and an M.B.A. under my belt and I'll give you a guess as to the last English class I have taken....yup, back in 12th grade, British and American Lit. :D My humanities Sufficiency was taken care of by a series of Spanish classes at WPI (and hence led to the IQP in Puerto Rico...nothing like hitting on the blackjack dealers in Spanish. ;) ).

Either way, picked a great school. Northeastern has some great faculty and alumni (I worked in Cambridge for 9 years until just recently). Without a doubt, Boston is the SECOND best college school in the country, next to Worcester (Worcester has 10 colleges in the city...hehe)

TJ out.

Cooper

I'm a Cooper student.

Cooper's a nice school. It's tiny. THere's about 1000 students total.

We have three schools: Engineering, Architecture and Art.

The education here is good. The professors are all really smart but some just can't teach for crap.

People think COoper is a very competitive school, but it's quite the opposite. Everyone helps each other out so everyone benefits. Of course, you always have those loners who get 4.0 GPA's by themselves, but they have no friends (seriously).

We're a closely knit group of nerds just trying to break a 3.0 GPA. It's a nice family.

Girls-wise... we're... ok. I think. We have some girls, and some are fairly attractive. But NYU and the New School are right around the corner, so babe-ogling is not hard to do around here.

Oh yeah, Cooper is free. r0x0rz

Both The University of Texas and Texas A&M rank in the top 20 for almost every type of engineering you could name. I personally am studying Civil Engineering at Texas A&M and its very challenging. Be prepared to study your ass regardless of which school you pick. ;) Being as close as you are, I would recommend visiting both schools. They are two very different environments but both are great places to go to school.

Fellow aggie on the boards I see. I to am in the Manufacturing Engineering Department after spending 2 yrs in CS. Note to you though if you like the hardware side of computers and decide to come here DO NOT go into the CS dept. Computer engineering is what you want. But I would look at a&m and ut. Theres absolutely no need for you to go to any other school since you have 2 of the best in state.

Umm, no. :) Caltech is by far the hardest to get into in California. Go to MIT if you want cut throat (although freshman year is all pass/fail). Go to Caltech if you want nice weather, ugly girls and cooperative learning. Come to Cornell if you want to have a good program, crummy weather, cute girls and lots of great non-engineeirng courses. Go to RIT (rochester) if you want co-op (they have mandated co-ops required, something like 1.5 years of pure co-op at several companies, but it's a five year program).

MIT was not all that cut-throat. Since there were no class rankings, there wasn't much competitiveness. Of course, you wanted to get on the good side of the grading curves and stuff, but in terms of students being un-cool about helping fellow students for fear of class ranking issue... none of that. All students were cool, people helped each other... a good learning environment.

Now, if you were talking about break-neck speed and work-load... well then... ok. Nothing to argue there. Many a sleepless night was had there, and not due to drinking/parties.

Guybrush,
I got into Cooper Union (probably due to my last name :D)... but blew it off b/c I thought MIT had a slightly more recognizable name, it was a little larger, I wasn't overly psyched about living in NY, and I wanted $25k in loans when I graduated. :Q

Seriously... if I had to do it over again... I'd give Cooper a closer look. I got MIT envy once I got in there.

Congrats on getting in and going. That ain't an easy place to get into. Plus, when you graduate, you'll be able to put that "loan" money into a nice ride, house, boat, etc. :D

Oh man, when my parents found out I got into Cooper, they SPOILED THE HELL OUT OF ME.

They had no qualms whatsoever with giving me money. Hehe, life was good. Now I make my own money to buy my own hot dogs. Oh well...

Yeah another vote for Texas A&M. I just finished my freshman year in Electrical Engineering, and it seems plenty challenging for me.
