What are the best driving games? (realistic and good)

I am looking to buy some driving games (as well as pedals and a steering wheel) does anybody have any recommendations on what to get? (for both)
 
I recommend getting a Lotus Elise. It's only about $23k, and provides an ultimate driving experience. And yes, left drive (for right side of the road) models are available.

Well, i guess i didnt see the General periphials discussion or the general gaming discussion....

as far as hardware, im looking for a game that will look nice with a gf3 and a ddr athlon xp system 🙂

I love my Logitech force feedback wheel/pedals.

Also, a really fun driving game is Midtown Madness 1 and 2 (2 is better). It's just a lot of fun driving around realistic cities and bashing into cars. It kinda lets you get your driving frustrations out without going to jail 🙂

His hardware question was about the wheel, Budman. I think that qualifies 🙂
 
How much are you expecting to pay for your wheel? They come in all types of prices. From $39.00 to $2000.00. My experience with race wheels is you generally get what you pay for. Are you looking for forse feed back?

Thomas-Super Wheels is one of the best you can buy. They are a little pricey, but will last forever.

Act-Labs Forse RS is one of the best forse feed back wheels you can buy. A little bit more reasonable in price.

Of coarse there are the Microsoft and Logitech wheels which come in both forse feed back and non-forse feedback versions. Both are good basic wheels but do not hold up as long or as well as TSW's or Act-Labs.

I am in the middle of building my own homemade race wheel. If I ever get it finished, I will post some pics of it.

Nascar 2002 was just released this week. It is the ultimate and most advanced stock car simulation game available.😎
Grand Prix Legends is also a great race game.
All the Need for Speed titles are fun.
Dirt Track Racing is ok.
Nascar Heat is not bad, but N4 and N2002 is much better imho.

Edit: I believe this qualifies as general hardware; along with some suggested software to use with the hardware😉 Mr. wannabe Mods.
 
The Microsoft Sidewinder series of steering wheels is awesome for the money - less pretty than the Logitechs but probably more robust. The only problem as far as I feel about it is that the pedal seem to have too much travel, and it's difficult to lift your feet off the gas and step on the brakes quickly.

I'm looking for a good realistic networked driving game as well, as far as single player goes, I think NFS series is good, but there must be something else out there? Not as amazing as Project Gothham but surely...?

NASCAR is the most pathetic racing series, except perhaps the World of Outlaws. Why anyone would like NASCAR is beyond me.

To address the hardware part 😛 ..... I have tried quite a few pc wheels.For a budget non force feedback wheel the Microsoft precision pro is tough to beat, but the controller software wont allow split axis pedals in Win XP. The act-laps wheel I had real problems with; the steering was very stiff and notchy, and the pedals were ,imo, useless. I believe there are upgraded pedals available now, but I got rid of my act-labs. I am now the happy owner of a Logitech Momo. The force feedback is great, the wheel feels wonderful (leather..Mmm ) and the pedals are precise and smooth...perfect for GPL=)
 
Buy a playstation 2, and get Gran Turismo 3. 🙂 I've never personally played a better driving game, IMO. As for computer car sims - I haven't played them much so I can't really tell you.
