What are the best brand power supplies?

Only recently did I realize how important a quality power supply is in building a computer.

I am in the process of building a new computer (P4 1.6 ghz, Fry's special) and need suggestions on what brand power supply I should look for. From posts I've read, it seems like Enermax is the best and Antec is fairly good as well.

Are there any other brands I should look for? I'm on a budget, so buying an Enermax is probably out of the question unless I can find one really cheap. If you can, please list the brands in order of quality.

thanks for the help

I think that although Enermaxes are popular (I own two), I don't think that there's any consensus that they're the best. I think they're alright, although I've modded mine because they're nowhere near as quiet as is claimed. I like PC Power and Cooling and Antec and believe they're just as good as Enermax. Depending on the system you're building, if cost is a big factor, I'd look for a used 300W Antec on the FS/FT forum from a reliable trader--they frequently sell for $20-$25 shipped.

There`re plenty of very good PSUs,as for the best well you will get different opinions on this, anyway good brands like Antec,Enermax,Sparkle,Enhance etc are all good choices.

Best: Antec, Sparkle, PC Power & Cooling, Enermax
Good: Enhance
Worst: Deer

Most others probably fall into the "Average" category

Thanks for all the quick replies.

I was leaning towards buying an antec, but now I'll take a look at the other brands everyone listed.

A funny thing is that I've stayed away from Sparkle power supplies because their name sounded so cheap! Also, it reminds me of that Simpsons episode where Homer is on that sopa box cover, Mr. Sparkle.

Hm, the very best would probably be something that has certification for use in medical equipment. Doesn't mix well with "budget" though.

My suggestion for an affordable PSU: FSP (Fortron/Sparkle/Powerman Group). They are sold under different the brand names, which is a bit confusing, but you'll recognise them by the model number wich looks like FSPXXX, XXX being watts.
