What are the best brand CDR's to buy?

I'm currently visiting Taiwan, home of everything known to computer geeks, and I was wondering what is the best brand of CDR's that I should get? Dirt cheap prices you know. 😀

All manufacturers will be mucho cheapo out there i would of guessed! Personally I like "Mirror" CD's. 😉

lol, I guess I should of been more specific.

I was referring more to the highest grade CDR's, that could be burned at insanely high speeds, great shelf-life, overburn ability, and compatibility with burners.

I know there are sites that are dedicated with cataloging all CDR's known to man and testing them in every way shape or form. Now if I could only find that site again, or perhaps if anyone knows of one. ^^

www.cdspeed2000.com has a listing of cdrs capacities and errors. I'm not sure what is best overall, but I buy Verbatim Datalife Plus CDRs by the 100 at Sam's for $28. Their Super AZO is supposedly a superior formula. It'd be nice if they could quantify how. 🙂

I buy verbatim cd's at sams club... 50 pack of colored ones for like cheap and they work in everything I've put them in...

I only use Taiyo-Yudens (TYs). Built to last and never have had any coasters with em. Some of the others that I've tried tend to "flake" out literally after a while, especially if you leave em in your car or expose them to sunlight for prolonged periods. Fuji are always TYs, some of the other brands you have to "shop" for em. Best Buy among other places usually has 'em for like $3-$5 per $50 pack after a $10 or so MIR.

Btw, if you're visiting Taiwan, I wouldn't waste luggage space on CDRs...go for the neato gadgets and "grey market" stuff you can't find here!!! See if you can't find some rare mobos, vid cards, etc. for cheap. When I was in Tokyo last April for work, I stocked up on some nice electronic toys 🙂

I bought a 200-pak of 16x Prime Peripherals cd's while back at the local OfficeMax. They was selling them for $20 bucks just to get rid of them I guess. I used them in many brands of burners and cd roms without any problems. Below is also some other cd-r's I used without problems.

Memorex 48X cd-r
Verbatim 16x cd-r
Imation Mini cd-r

The crappiest stuff out there are CDRs made by CMC Magnetics, and they make a lot of the "free after rebate" spindles you see so often. I currently have a spindle of Philips 40X cdrs which are total crap, I've been able to burn 1 out of the first 12, the rest were coasters.

The best brands that I have used are Ritek, Taiyo Yuden, and Mitsubishi. Of course it's hard to know who makes what now since the brands change manufacturers around (TDK used to sell TY, but I think they have gone to CMC Magnetics now?)

In terms of brands that I have used without problems, Fuji, Verbatim Datalife Plus, and Memorex. I have some old Imation CDRs that are CMC Magnetics, but for some reason they burn pretty well, maybe they were a good batch.

Thanks for the link, beatle. But does anyone know of any more indepth website reviews of CDR's? I tried searching for it on google, but my being inept didn't help much. 🙁

chizow, Yeah, I thought about that, but this is the 3rd Christmas I've come here in a row, since my family lives here now. They come back to the states for the summers, so if I forget anything, I'll be sure to tell them. 🙂 Although I have seen a lot of off brand components for real cheap, and some not-so-off brand for cheap as well. They have Sunon fans rated at 2.6W over here for $3 U.S. Last year, I think I bought 10 of them to bring home as gifts to my friends, lol. Anyhow, I'll keep looking for rare computer geek gems that one could only find in Taiwan.

As for the CDR's, it seems as if the TY CDR's are good. I've heard of them before, but was just wondering what other brands there are. I'll go take a look at the selection I have and report back. Thanks!

I've used Sony, Imation, Phips, Memorex, Fuji, and Maxwell. All worked fine. Think my next batch will be Sony, haven't used those in ages.

The ones i disliked are the cheapo unmarked blanks from Fry's. 50pk for $14 a couple years ago. Pure trash.

Memorex and TDK (and most others) are a variety of brands. The most common is CMC which are not very good. (In my experience.) The 40x memorex were almost all CMC.

Taio Yudens are very nice. If you see TDK, Memorex or Fuji spindles made in Japan with a spin on cap they are probably taio yudens.

Ritek (TDKs tend to be CMC, Ritek or TY) are pretty nice.

Liteon hates mitsubishi chemical disks. At least thats what I've heard. Haven't tried them myself.

The upshot of all of this is that the best disks are made in japan and not taiwan. So, save the luggage space.

if you buy the TDK 100pak from CompUSA and see the milky (not clear) inner circle around the center hold of the disk they are TY disks and probably the best I've used.

I've used several different brands: Verbatim, Fuji, Maxell, Dr. Data, Memorex, and probably one or two others that I have forgotten. I have had the least number of problems with Memorex. They are about the only CD-Rs that actually work in my dad's car CD player, which is really sensitive for some unknown reason. I know it has problems with Fuji and Maxells, but the others I'm not sure.

I've been through 4 spindles of 100 cdr's of the Sony brand.. and have had no bad burns at all....I love these CDR's

ARE Philips 48x CDRW drives more dependent on CD-R media quality ?

I have used over 5 different brands (ASKA, Nortech, Princo, MDA, Quartex) and not one of these 48x compatible brands work on this drive @ 48x

I don't burn a lot of CDs, but I'm using SmartBuy 16X.

My CyberDrive 058D burns them at 32X with zero coasters to date. (Sound of wood being knocked.)
