what are the best blu ray movies currently out?

There seem to be quite a lot of older movies that were just 'ported' over to blu ray, and it's beginning to turn into quite the PITA to figure out if any of them are actually decent transfers or not. So I was just wondering what everybody's picks for 'worth it' blu ray movies. They don't HAVE to be older movies, that was just an example. I just don't want to drop extra money on a copy of a movie that doesn't look much better than the DVD copy.

-Star Trek (the new one) looked and sounded great.
-Anything by Pixar will look and sound great.
-Planet Earth
-Master and Commander is often noted for its great audio.
-Sherlock Holmes had fantastic low end effects, believe it or not.

Edit: I always suggest renting rather than buying, though. You can rent a movie a lot of times before you approach the cost of purchase.

Both of the Batman movies are good.

Honestly, I would rather have a little grainy picture and a good story over "great visuals" and no or predictable story (I.e. Avatar)

Honestly, just google "<movie title> blu review" and see what the experts think.. I haven't hit a bad title yet but rent most of mine as a previous poster also suggested.

As far as show off material to own, Avatar is a great choice... both Transformers movies... Star Trek.. Iron Man... Saving Private Ryan...

Older movies with Amazing transfers:

1. "Wizard of Oz"
2. Older James Bond movies. "Dr No" is absolutely amazing looking.

New movies, reference quality:

1. "Avatar" (best looking and sounding BD I've ever seen)
2. "A Bug's Life" or pretty much any Pixar movie

There are other great examples, but those are just the ones off the top of my head.

Batman (as in Burton/Keaton) was like watching a whole new movie on BD after having an early non-anamorphic WS single layer DVD release.

Hmmm...I was talking about the most recent version (circa 2000), but may have to check out the one you mention. I did catch it on the CW a while back in HD and that was pretty good. BD should be better.

The picture is of course much clearer, but really it's the colour that is the difference.

Sorry to pluck that one out but there's a thread over at AVS about an alarming trend with some new BR soundtracks. They are starting to nerf the LFE content and filter out anything under 25hz. The waterfalls they show there are pretty alarming. The DTS soundtracks on a number of DVDs have much deeper LFE content than the BR soundtracks. I think they are starting to narrow it down to particular studios.

Master & Commander was one of them that got neutered.

Last I checked people still couldn't figure out any good reason why they would do it. One theory was that content in the sub 30hz regions were getting so intense that it was causing too many incapable subwoofers to bottom out and damage drivers or amps.

Sucks to know that they are dumbing down soundtracks to protect people with low end equipment. 🙁

<which is a majority of the movie watching public>

Mind you I feel your pain... and agree with the sentiment... but I get where it is coming from when lawyers are involved...

Definitely go with Attenborough. It's dipped down to around $37 a few times recently, so it might be worth it to wait for a better deal.

Yeah, I got mine from a B&N deal. I definitely wouldn't have picked it up if it weren't the UK Attenborough version.

Yep, me too. I got it for $36 shipped. I've already watched the first two shows and it looks beautiful. I wouldn't take the Oprah version if they gave it to me for free.

Check out the amazon.uk site for the Earth/Life series. I've been buying a lot of my latest "sets" from there. I paid $52 USD shipped for the David Attenborough version of Earth and the Band of Brothers set.

The UK version of Earth has an extra disk and is higher native resolution too I think. A few months ago I paid $45 USD shipped for the first 6 Harry Potter movies on BR.

I purchased Planet Earth from the UK site in order to get the Attenborough version and had no problems with it. However, Life from Amazon UK is 1080/50p, which won't play in most U.S. players. There was a big thread on SD about it recently. Unless your BD player is cable of playing 1080/50p, then it won't play Life from the Amazon UK site.

However, we are able to get the Attenborough version of Life in the U.S., so it's not as big of a deal. The main thing with Planet Earth is that AFAIK only the Sigourney Weaver version is available in the U.S.

FWIW, I never saw the Weaver version of Planet Earth being sold in stores and I'm in the States. I bought several copies from various stores (Target, Best Buy) and all that was ever sold was Attenborough's version. That's what I thought I'd see with Life as well but that hasn't been the case.

Well, now that I think about it, I think the problem with the Attenborough version in the U.S. was price. The Weaver version would dip down below $30 on Amazon quite frequently, but the Attenborough version wouldn't on the Amazon U.S. site. I bought the Attenborough version of Planet Earth for $28 shipped from Amazon UK.

I see now that the Attenborough version of Planet Earth is only $40 on Amazon U.S.; however, it used to sit at $50 all the time. And $28 is still a fair bit lower than $40.
