well, I'll let you all know what is bought, the plan is on spending around $3 - $4k...g/f wants a convertible, so we'll see how it turns out. I'm guessing it'll be a mustang or sebring or some other chick variant

PM PAB (psycho andy's brother). He regularly hits up the car auctions and can probably give you the best idea of going rates.
Once again, vi is the one that posts the smartest response.
If PAB says it, it must be true. Therefore, vi is correct.

went to an auction today, found some cars I liked, but it was raining. The dealer I was with sadi it's harder to evaluate a vehicle in the rain, especially with the body, and he recommended I refrain from buying. I'll be hitting up another auction tomorrow (a public auction), and the Manheim dealer auction on Tuesday. One thing I found out is that the dealers often put reserves on their cars running through the auction, so it's not like a public auction where the highest bidder automatically wins.

daveymark, how did you go about finding a dealer that would work for you? Just went from place to place? I've talked to PAB a bit about buying a used car by summer's end and wouldn't mind checking out a few auctions.

Two dealers I found out about through word of mouth, one guy I found on craigslist, and one guy I found because I casually mentioned it to him when inquiring about a land rover.

I can say this, it's probably not a good idea to buy on your first trip. Better to just get an idea of how they run, then when you have one or two under your belt, get ready to make a purchase.

FWIW, due to being a cheap bastard and extremely picky - I buy more stuff off the street than at auction.

you get better deals lowballing private sellers? How do you approach that situation? DO you say it's worth less, or do you say that the lowball amount is "all you have, or do you negotiate to a price you both agree on?

I have to adapt to the situation, I mean realistically speaking - if I see there's going to be $500 in bodywork, I'm going to say there needs to be $500 in bodywork. I tell it as it is and where I need to be.

There's a difference in lowballing and buying right. (Item is sellable at $11,000)

Lowball: I'm asking $10,000.

I'll give you $7000 CASH MONEY.

Buying right: I'm asking $10,000

Is that the best you can do?

Well, I can do $9000.....(negotiation begins)

Buying and selling ANYTHING is an art. People who generally know how to buy and sell will buy and sell anything to a reasonable advantage. There are some people that can't negotiate their way from paper to plastic at the Kroger.

Well, I found an used 2001 Honda S2000 for reasonable price about 300 miles away. Went this morning to take a look at it and bought it after having my mechanic friend check out the vehicle. Just came home. Exhausted but happy. Now I'm going to take a nap.

My next project is to learn how to drive a stick so I can drive it. 😀 Shouldn't be too hard since I know how to ride a motocycle. I learned pretty quick after I bought my Honda CBR600 F4.
