why would you want to run a 7 computer lan with domain names over the workgroup setup? no http server, no mail or ftp server. also why would you run win2k adv serv as the server when you all your software works fine on win2kpro or xp pro and one of them could be the server?

Perhaps you're looking to learn about AD
Centralized management
Central file storage and backup
You're planning for expansion
You've got money to burn
and the list goes on...

Having a domain lets you maintain a single list of users rather than putting every user into ever computer that user will access, both locally and over the network. For a few computers and users, a workgroup is easy to manage, but at some point you'll want a domain.

A Win2K Server can run the DHCP server service to automatically configure TCP/IP on the client machines. This makes adding and removing client computers easier.

A dedicated Win2K Server will give you a somewhat faster file server than a Win2K/XP Pro machine due to Server being more performance tuned to being a server.

For a LAN of your size, I can't imagine why you would want Win2K Advanced Server. Get the 10 client access Win2K Server, not Advanced Server.

i appreciate the info, actuall it is a friend of mines business and he asked me to look at and i was a little confused as to whey they did what they did. they are using a linksys router as the dhcp server as like you, i cant understand why they went the adv serv in stead of servre.

bob332, unless their server machine has more than 4 processors or more than 4GB of memory, they're definately going to waste a lot of money getting Advanced Server over plain Server.

They prolly bought their version on Kazaa ;) That's why they are using Adv. Server over Server

The best reason is because peer to peer authentication is pure hell. Trying to create local account for every single share, printer or file, plain outright sux. Any central authentication server makes this much easier, whether it be a windows 2k/NT4.0, or a Samba v2.2 or newer PDC, make file sharing much, much easier to maintain and control.
