what are the advantages and why would i pay an extra five dollars for one a month over dynamic IPs??

so you can leave your machine on and run web/ftp/etc.. dns.. BUT hacker remembers same ip all the time.. dynamic is not as good but these hacker won't find your machine unless they scan for it... and other stuff as well..

Probably nothing tangible for the average user. Unless you piss off shady people or leave windows file sharing on, you shouldn't have much to worry about.

As mentioned, if you want to run your own webserver, mailserver, FTP server, etc.....
You can do all these things with a dynamic IP, although it is bothersome.

Excellent point. on "Always-on" connection versus having to manually connect with a PPPOE client.

Well, PPPoE sucks, but if they could just get my client to reconnect automatically every time it logs off I'd be happy. (It happens to me once or twice a week on average and it pisses me off to come back home to find my OGR client unable to access the keyserver.)

However, even with my dynamic IP address unchanged for just a few days someone is trying to hack me.

Some person has scanned me 2400 times in 36 hours.

Stupid idiot hackers. I hate them.
