If you work in video, picture editing programs a lot! Then it's a must, it's nice for the games that support it and if you happen to have that monitor lying around and have no use for it other than a multimonitor setup then go for it. I have dual monitor setup right now, though its currently setup for on monitor per computer (when playing MS Flight Simulator 2004 I hook up the second to the PC playing the game.) Enjoy!

For pornographic applications, it's a must have. You can view full screen pics on one screen while viewing full screen video on the other. It's like having two screens. Well it is.

The only thing I like about it is that I can look at two things at a time like tweeve2002 said and this does come in handly when doing image editing or any type of mulimedia stuff like that and that is why many companies have more then one monitor.

Meh, don't bother. If you can't see the usefulness on your own you probably don't have a crowded enough screen to use two. I keep IMs, mail, hard drive space, volume, temps/fans if doing heavy computation, sometimes a folder or two all open on my aux screens.

It's also useful for programming against APIs (javadocs and man pages particularly) or writing involving citing from papers or web sources since both of those are inherently multiple document things and you can keep the primary one open on one screen and the sources on the other.

A must have for the cheating college student. No better way to plagerize a term paper and having it out on one screen while you cut and paste into the other.

Okay, another scenario. You have a presentation and you failed to prepare. No better way than to search the web on one screen, and Powerpoint open in the other to cut and paste -- no switching screen.

Third sceanario -- watch TV or DVD on one screen, while working on another.

Before my other LCD blew, Porn was awesome. Now it's just not what it used to be anymore...

Just out of curiosity, how good is Linux with dual monitor setups? I'm curios cause I run like 3 OS's(Windows Server 03, XP Pro, Debian Linux).

I had dual monitors for about 2 years... then one monitor for about 3 months, it was misery! I'm now blissfully back to two monitors again! :)

I have Winamp, 2 instances of CoolMon and SysMetrix running on one monitor. I have Firefox, Outlook, games, and any other main apps on another. On another I have irc and AIM. It really doesn't cost so much if keep your old monitors when you upgrade. Since they end up being secondary or tertiary displays for stuff like chat and system monitoring, it's not all that important for them to have the boldest colors.

I'm running two and it is so very worth it. Takes a little getting used to; but once you've been with it for a little while, it is difficult to go back. Closest analogy I can draw offhand is to tabbed browsing. When I was using IE I didn't mind not having tabbed browsing all that much, once I switched to firefox, I got hooked on tabs and now I couldn't surf without them. A second monitor is also wonderful for little windows that need a fair bit of watching (Gaim, Motherboard monitor, Bittorrent, etc.)
I should note, though, that I didn't actually pay anything for dual monitors, just hauled up another scungey 17incher from the basement and plugged it in. I might be slightly more demanding if I were thinking of shelling out for a second 2100fp or soemthing of that sort.

Dual monitor is key for trading stocks/futures. One screen for charts, the other for order screen/news/misc.
